ISU hires new coach (per ESPN)

That's because Alford won the B10 tournament not the B12 tournament. The B12 teams know that their conference tournament is the real tournament. The NCAA tournament is just a watered down version of that event.

The Iowa State fanatical fans think they are going to have a fantastic year, and I don't see how any coach, including Hoiberg, could live up to their expectations. There are probably going to be a lot of disappointed cyclone fans after next year, but his success will probably be determined if he can recruit.

Plus Iowa was likely out of the NCAA tourney before they won 4 straight. It meant much more than playing against a banged up Kansas team. I guess they want something to hang their hat on.

I loved Hoiberg in his press conference on Friday saying their team this year was a national title team. LOL No pressure new guy.

I'm pretty underwhelmed. Zero even mid-major experience, zero recruiting ties anywhere in the Midwest. Don't feel good about this one.

Is that not the most glaring fundamental difference between Iowa and ISU? Iowa is a place people want to be. Outside of Alford he was trying to get out ahead of the posse and then eventually did. (that whole deal had messed up circumstances. If you haven't heard Jon Millers closed door encounter with him I encourage you all to listen to the podcast where he speaks of that) Most coaches come to Iowa wanting to set roots. At ISU they have one foot out the door during the press conference where they are being introduced. Fred was their best chance at having another Johnny Orr. I just think it's funny he's leaving. Now what are the odds he'll coach for ISU again is the next question? Because it's safe to say he won't be in Chicago past 4 or 5 years. So win lose or draw would he rather stay in the NBA after that taste of it or come back home?...

As a coach? No. As a AD? Yes, I could definitely see it. Looking where the NBA is going he will have NBA executive opportunities as long as he wants them. His health and the odds that they(hoiberg/bulls management) will not be able to put together a roster that can get past Lebron makes me think he will not be there longer than 4 or 5 years. So it will come down to running the ISU athletic dept. or running a NBA team.

I would like to see Iowa State be successful except when they play Iowa. He might be a pretty good coach, but I was wondering how a lower level coach from Kentucky would have strong recruiting ties for Iowa State. It will be interesting to see who his assistants will be.

yeah, except for Alford who left for New Mexico.

oh, and Raveling, who left for USC.

oh, and Olson, who left for Arizona.

oh, and Miller, who left for Oregon St.

I guess an easier question would be which Iowa BB coaches did not leave for another job.

It does seem like the president has his hands all over this hire. I'm guessing he impressed in the interview and preached a similar style of play. Unless he plans on carrying on the "transfer tradition" Clone fans will have to temper their patience after this year. This coach will have to establish his midwest recruiting connections. Similar to Fran not being able to get recruits out of Chicago area until year 5. One thing he does have going for him is having a flashy team for this year to get the attention of 2017 recruits.

What the flock are you taking about. Ralph & Lute left. Obviously, they didn't want to be at Iowa. For great coaches, Iowa is a stepping stone job!

yeah, except for Alford who left for New Mexico. Run out for several good reasons.

oh, and Raveling, who left for USC. Run out of town by racists.

oh, and Olson, who left for Arizona.

oh, and Miller, who left for Oregon St.

Ever heard of Tom Davis. He seemed to do alright. If you'd like to compare clown coaches to Iowa coaches I'm game.

It wasn't to long ago cyfans were claiming Fred had built the program up to such a high level that there wasn't a coach in the country who wouldn't want the ISU job, By the looks of the interviews and subsequent hire, they were right.

For all the Iowa fans that made fun about the possibility of hiring Otz, I would prefer that.

lightning - this link is for you - I was going to simply call bs on your 'he left because of racists' but i have some supporting evidence to go along with my rebuttal:

That was the story I heard and it may or may not be true but it was from what I would consider a very solid source. There were even specific details about the "issues". It doesn't really matter to me either way. I'll defer to your version and accept it as fact.
