Is this serious?

How do you guys think all of those shot putters and rowers and swimmers can afford to take three years of their life on hold and train exclusively for a two week sporting event?

The freaking USOC pays them! The vast majority of athletes do not make any money from their athletics, and many do not have a job EXCEPT for training for the Olympics. If everyone else is pulling cheddar, why not pay teh ballers.

Yeah, they make more money, but they are also costing themselves more money by participating. We pay the rowers and those stupid equestrian people so we can be assured we have teh best athletes at the games. If we have to pay to have the best ballers, then do it.

I was under the impression all athletes worked at Home Depot to be able to afford their training. Have their commercials steered me wrong?

Oh yeah, I forgot! When we lose teh medal count to China, we'll know it is because when our guys were supposed to be in teh pool, they were helping some meth head haul plywood to his truck.

not all of them make all that money afterwards. even stars dont all become sportscastors.

plus they only make the amount they do because we pay them too.

Dude, some of those guys make more money in a year than people make in a lifetime. They are set for life as long as they are half as smart as a box of rocks. If I had a chance to play in the olympics I'd take it and be thankful. This little ***** is crying about something that probably isn't going to take a dent out of his paycheck. I say don't let him play, there are plenty of guys who would want his spot for the honor.

This is so ignorant. Do you want the best team or not? The reason we have the best athletes on the Olympic team is because we pay those people to train for our teams. Basketball players shouldn't be any different because they make more than the skeet shooters pulling a double at Home Depot.

There is no grey area here. It's simple if you want paid to represent your country join the Army if not.... Stay home. Nobody is making you be apart of the Olympics. In the USA anyway. In some other countries even that may not be a choice.

i am not saying i agree but i do see the point.

pro players have a shelf life and their bodies start to break down and they cant play anymore. each player has a limit of how many games their body can take. the games they play in the olympics and training for it takes games off that count and that is their livelihood. i know they make lots of money but it means less yrs they will play and that means less money they make. i understand that.

i teach but there isnt a shelf life for teachers. i can teach until im 70 and possibly do just as good as i do now (not saying i will or all teachers do). a pro cant play until they are 70. remember they make their money over 10-15 yr careers while we make ours over 50 yr careers sometimes. i get why some would think this way.

remember to us it is a game. but to them it is their job. it isnt about the amount they make but rather how long they have in their job. it is like overtime. i know most jobs get paid for overtime working.

After only 2-3 years, players in the NBA will never have to worry about money again. Yeah, I'm jeolous, wish I'd only had to work 2-3 years to be independantly wealthy. (I wuz 2 short). Those that don't see the point of that, should consider that being on an olympic team has prestige that can increase their salaries in their day jobs. I just am so pleased that professionals are now welcomed in the olympics and no longer excluded by the ridiculous AAA designations when all the rest in the world were using professionals in the Olympics. I sure don't think we need Wade to win the gold. USA! USA! USA!

Why? Is it or is it not another way of representing/serving your country?

Representing your country and serving your country are not the same thing. One of them requires one to risk life and limb to protect the country against danger. The other involves people playing badminton and speed walking.

i dont know maybe because one puts their life on the line in battle and the other is trying to get necklace with a gold medallion at the end.
Exactly and witch one do you believe should be "compensated="
=

both should be compensated for doing work. but comparing the 2 is weird with how different they are. but i am trying to figure out which witch has anything to do with olympics or military.

i am not saying pros dont make enough money. they do. but the olympics is a money making entity now. the athletes deserve compensation. all of them, swimmers, basketball, track, curling. i dont care who they are they are money making tools to the olympics and as such should be compensated.

just because they have usa on their jersey doesnt mean they should be compared to a marine or navy officer or the like. but those guys/girls are doing an honor by serving their country as some have said the olympics is...but dont they also get paid for that?

Some people just don't get it. If it has to be spelled out for you more clearly then I'll give it my best shot. The Olympics is an International organization that has their own set of rules. Kinda sorta like the NCAA. And if you choose as a free citizen of this country to participate (and are good enough) Then you are choosing to follow those rules and regulations. It's very simple. If you don't WANT TO PARTICIPATE because your not getting paid/compensated (enough). then stay home. Let someone else who wants to do it. I know that Dwayne was baited into it and was answering a question but the guy who has since started back tracking his statement should have been smarter at how he answered it.

I think everyone gets that.

The comparing I'm doing between the two is that when a military person of any kind is on foreign soil as is an Olympian athlete that they are representing the USA. And I think that paying Olympians more then what our service men and women make to do what they do would be ********. Alot of the people that serve really don't make squat. And the money that I'm sure alot of people are saying these athletes "deserve" is more then most normal people make in a lifetime. So I have no problem at all with these athletes who compete for a couple weeks every 4 years not making anything for it. They make tons of money in endorsements and other ways after it's all said and done. Look at the west dsm girl. I'm pretty sure she's not hurting for money and never has been.

I think your train of thought has derailed.

You are correct...however, a lot of Olympic athletes make their money through endorsements. Yes the USOC does pay them, but if you think it is enough for them to just train only...I think you will be sadly mistaken.
