Is This Board Bi-Polar?

...only if the same posters are being overly negative, then overly positive.

I suspect that when Iowa loses, the negative people post all of their vitriol. Then, when Iowa wins, the pie in the sky folks post.

Maybe I'm wrong, but this seems to be the case.

I think racer has sped to the correct conclusion here.

We're conditioned to college football where 1-2 losses ends your season (as far as competing for a national championship go) so one loss pretty much is the end of the world in a lot of ways...

I think this is also true. I only post or read in the basketball forum so this doesn't apply to me but I get your point. Many frequent both boards. I'm basketball only.

Obviously, as many have pointed out already, most message boards and fan bases overreact to both wins and losses.

However, I think some of the ups and downs we've seen with the basketball team also relate to the fact the team has been kind of bi-polar in their performances. Both between different games, and within the same games. They'll play one game and look like an average team, and then they'll play another game like the Michigan one and look outstanding. Or within a game they'll play outstanding for a 10 minute stretch, and then go completely cold for a 10 minute stretch. I know a certain amount of this is just the game of basketball, but this team sure seems to fluctuate quite a bit in terms of consistency. Anyway, it can make it hard for a fan to determine exactly what kind of team we have. I'm just hoping they are peaking at the right time of the season!

In short.

Real world= Team is never as bad as their worst loss or as good as their best win. There's a median somewhere.

Message Board= A loss is always worse then it should be and after a win... Who are we kidding there's always somehting to complain about.

Yes, but it's not as bad as the football board. I can't stand to go to the football board after losses because of all the negative Nancy's.

"A pessimist is one who makes difficulties of his opportunities and an optimist is one who makes opportunities of his difficulties" - Harry Truman

This board is NOT bi-polar.

Near all of those who post here however are.

So jumping off topic of giant white bears that swing both ways..

When White Magic brings us a championship this year how do you restructure his contract?

Big 10 regular season champion: auto 1 year extension.
S16 appearance: auto 1 year extension
NC appearance: gaurentted 3 year extension, victory 4 year.

Win the NC and he can have whatever he wants...Barta reports to Fran at this point.

I have to admit had Iowa lost on Saturday I would have started getting worried about the tournament bid. Message boards are like this, win and everyone feels good (unless it is the football board, see Northwestern win) but lose and the sky is falling. The Ohio State loss really did not bother me, it was obvious Ohio State was playing with more urgency. The losses that bug the crap out of me are losing at Wisconsin and against MSU, I still look at the B1G standing and do the "what if" thing.

I am bi polar...there, I said it (w/regard to Iowa basketball and football). But, I am on medication...alcohol. I drink after wins to celebrate and after losses to drown my sorrows. Usually, I have enough control not to post too soon after a win or a loss.

Pro sports fans have no soul. Except pro baseball. Unless I'm gambling on it, pro basketball is worthless and the people who watch it must also like pro wrestling. I.e. It's a joke! College sports are for the truly passionate and emotionally unstable whackadoos like myself who may have more than a pinch of mental illness, but who are never dull. And I refuse to take my meds because I like the highs too much.

Maybe... NFL is my favorite sport however.

Also #1 in the US by a huge margin.

To be bipolar:

A person must have ups and downs. If just one state or the other is experienced, it's not bipolar disorder.

For an up or manic episode, a person must experience an elevated mood for at least a week. Usually there is a feeling of grandiosity, an inflated sense of self-esteem, in which the person feels glorified and able to do anything.

In a down or depressed mood, the state must be present for at least two weeks and he/she has to feel sad, empty, or hopeless nearly every day

Bipolar disorder usually begins in the late teenage years or in the early 20s, although children can be diagnosed or late onset could occur in one's 60s or 70s

I think this fits Hawkeyenation to a T....other than the two week downer after a loss. Usually eradicated after a win shortly thereafter.
