Is there really NO ONE better than Meyer?

When has 5/5 ever been "automatic" for anyone in football.

Quite often when you're kicking from the 15 yd line. Is that not a realistic expectation when you're playing division I football. Hell, my high school kicker was nearly perfect from that distance, and he sure as hell kicked it farther than Meyer does on kickoffs.

We LOSE the game today without Meyer. It's that simple folks.

In retrospect, I agree. My gripe is not so much with FGs. He's young and I know he'll get better, but kickoffs are a different story. Just think his lack of distance really stresses our coverage and D. Would be nice if we could consistently kick it in the endzone and keep the oppostion inside their own 30.

Yeah, the distance hasn't been there late in the season. Not sure if he's gotten tired or having problem with the wind.

If he's kicking them short, they need to be kicked very high. Kaeding was great at getting height on the kickoffs.

Sheagle, you're being waaaaay to hard on Meyer. Those 'chip shots' were all from crazy angles. The one he missed was probably the closest one distance wise, and from one hash.

As for the kickoffs, he WAS booting them down to the endzone earlier in the year, but when the opposing team returned them, the coverage wasn't getting down there to get set. So he's been kicking them short to get our guys down to cover. And you probably have a short memory if you think we've been booting kickoffs down the field consistently over the past few years. I distinctly remember Murray's kickoffs dropping at the 10-15yd line. But the coverage was good enough to hold the opposing return team to maybe the 30-35yd line.

All of this wouldn't even be an issue, however, if it weren't for the 11 guys on offense, who couldn't put up points from INSIDE THE 10 YARD LINE!

I'll agree that our special teams, and specifically our kick game have been a concern, but that's not what nearly lost us the game. It's easy to blame kickers, but this one's on the other two sides of the ball more than it is on Meyer.

I know edr, knee jerk reaction after a terrible and disappointing game. Guess that last kickoff was really the one that stuck out in my mind. He's getting better and he did hit some big fgs. I remember Murray wasn't much better. Again, taking everything in, he had a good day. He'll only get better. Appreciate your non-attacking style of posting. I'm guilty of overreacting sometimes, and I only respect those that much more who not only point it out and back it up with evidence, but also do so in a respectful manner.

I think that's part of my problem as I seem to always use Kaeding as a benchmark instead of the exception. The guys was phenomenal, and I need to realize he's a rare talent.

ever notice we as fans are always afraid of kickoffs---but when someone kicks off to us we never think we are going to do anything with it?

Missing chip shot field goals and 35 yd kickoffs are KILLING US! I swear we are the only team in the nation that cannont kick the ball in the endzone even with the wind! Combine this with terrible kick coverage and teams are starting at mid-field.

Meyer is 9-11. Kaeding missed 8 field goals his true freshman year.

All of KF players get better, I think we saw meyer grow up today. He is only a freshman which means he will be even better later!!!!

That puts things a little more in perspective. I also did some research on his stats and they are pretty good. I don't know why, but his mistakes seem to stick out most in my mind. Maybe b/c, like today, when the game is so close it seems to always come back to missed fg, extra point, etc. I'm trying to find stats on his avg yds per kickoff, Jon. Any idea on these?
