Is there a scummier conference than the SEC?

Excellent report by ESPN's Outside the Lines on schools recruiting over the limits.

Among the many points made in the story, over the past four years the SEC averaged 102 recruits per individual school for 85 scholarships. The Big 10 averaged 86. Amazing that any recruit would ever believe a recruiting pitch from an SEC school.

So what happens if you're one of the kids that was over-recruited? You have to start over and open the recruiting process again?

Too bad the NCAA won't put a stop to this, but god forbid they try to reprimand an SEC school.

Its outrageous. If my kid even thinks about the SEC I will intervene. The "Houston Nut" rule was put into place to address over-signing. There is a good web site on this. I think it is called oversigning.com. Worth a look.

This is an astounding video.

At a minimum, every potential recruit to LSU and Miami (and their parents) should see it.

Whatever respect I had for Les Miles and Houston Nutt is completely gone.

Pretty interesting last bit there- Randy Shannon showed a upper classman DE the door to make room for Seantrell Henderson.
Guess maybe we shouldn't be buying all the crap about Shannon being a kids-first win-second guy.

I believe there was a story about this issue awhile back (maybe even a year or two ago?), and the gist of it was that this wasn't nearly as bad now wrt the SEC as it used to be. Apparently it's either still pretty bad, or they never actually stopped the practice.

What, is ESPN scared of Saban? He's one of the worst offenders in this area and he or Alabama are not mentioned?

It's also a joke that the NCAA puts so much effort into policing minor infractions yet they don't seem to have some rules to prevent this from happening.

He is by far the worst offender right now. He puts healthy players on medical hardships as a way to avoid the hard 85 rule and helps find places for players that just don't work out to transfer to.

Here is the link to the website that tracks this stuff. http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&sour...EvlfU8-1w&sig2=uCJm-k7PSAH0MwUfjTp7rA&cad=rja

This is really infuriating.

If you're gonna treat them like pros, then pay them... oh wait they already do that too.

I have to say, I really like how the Big 10 clearly was the best of the bunch.

Maybe there is something to this leaders and legends stuff.

Astounding is the right word. I can't believe the NCAA lets this crap go on. One guy mentioned that the actions that these schools take come very close to the legal definition of fraud, I'd say very very close.

Here's what I don't understand. I hear scholarship and think, these kids HAVE to have a scholarship to play football, like it's their little golden ticket to be let in. But can't they just pay their own way and be on the team anyway?

Not saying more kids should pay their own way, I'm just asking, does the 85 scholarships mean there's a limit to the number of players a team can have?
