Is it safe to assume that Phil Parker

will be the next defensive coordinator for the Hawks?

He was basically in charge of communication between the players and 'Norm in the box', correct? Or was it more than that and he was actually making adjustments?

I've heard he is very demanding of his defensive backs and, judging from the quality of our secondary play, is thorough in his game preparation.

If Ferentz leaves, all bets are off. But if Parker leaves (knock on wood) due to a health issue, retirement, or any other reason while Ferentz stays on as head coach, Phil would be an intriguing candidate because it would give the staff the continuity that has served it well thus far.

You may very well be right. I had a thought the other day that when Norm decides to retire Dan McCarney would be an interesting choice.

I would love to have McCarney, but I bet he still aspires to be a head coach again. My guess is that his next move is back to a head coach position. He probably is in the best spot right now to get another shot at a head coaching job. You're right that he is a very interesting choice, but I think it is very unlikely that it would ever happen.

I heard that Kacziensky ( sure I butchered that) was intense sat. got in players faces and cussed a lot. I guess he got in Clayborns face after he came off the field after he made a big play and he was pointing to the crowd and all pumped up, and the coach told him that that's not what they do at Iowa, and to get ready to play. Nice!

I would say McCarney would not take that job if offered...

I would say no outsiders, gotta stay within. Phil would be a great choice, heck of a track record with DB's, Big Ten guy, would have to go with Phil.

I would say you are right. No way KF choses an outsider to run his D, especially the two that were mentioned above.

To me, Phil seems like a candidate that would provide an almost seamless transition, when the time comes. He played and coached under Norm, so you have to believe 'his' defense would be nearly identical to Norm's.

And if there's one thing we know about Iowa football under Ferentz, it's that he values stability in his coaching staff and their overall philosophy as it relates to the game.

If I were Kirk, my first call would be to Ron Aiken. My second "call" would be to Phil Parker. I don't think we'd go wrong with either of those two choices.

Yes, Phil Parker has to be the choice. I don't think KF would be calling Ron Aiken since he has already left once.

Phil Parker is a great coach with a great football mind. I don't see there being any doubt as long as KF is the head coach, Phil Parker will be the next d-coordinator.

I feel uneasy talking about this...

Phil any relation to Norm? Like his son or something? If that's the case seems like they would coach nearly identical. Sounds good to me. I hate watching this defense sometimes, especially last year with teams driving the field, but at the end of the day I love them.

It's my understanding they're not related in anyway. However, I believe Norm coached Phil while at MSU.
