Is Fran McCaffery the BigTEN Coach of the Year?

Talk amongst yourselves......

I'm still a bit Verklempt after that really AWESOME Win at Carver, today

Turgeon. Maryland was basically 500 last year. Now they are beating Wisconsin and they are Top 10. That's one heck of an improvement.... I would say Painter, had he not embarrassed the B1G in the pre-season. But I will give him a tie for 2nd with Fran.

Bo Ryan. And it kills me to say it.

To the winner goes the spoils. Ryan put together a hell of a team and he always coaches them up. He deserves it. Fran is just as deserving for the turn around job he has done at Iowa. Our late season collapse was very disapointing last year, but our late season surge this year was exhilerating. Everyon was doubting him including myself if we could make the tourney. He proved he can and it looks like we may finally be back to the Davis years of comfortably making the tournament. The difference is Fran is a relentless recruiter and he will get the talent here to compete for the BIG. His own boys may be the best recruits Iowa has ever seen.

It would be hard to argue against the Wisconsin coach. They might be meeting expectations so far, but Ryan got them to the place for those expectations. I wonder if this will be the last year for Ryan. They might have a good team without Kaminsky, but it will be a lot harder next year. It sounds like an ideal situation for Ryan to retire if he desires to. Wisconsin is going to lose a couple of good players.

COY usually goes to the coach with the most impressive turn around or the one who overcame the most obstacles. My guess would be that Painter will win. If I had a vote I would probably go Ryan.

I can't say Bo Ryan deserves it. Where was Wisconsin picked this year? First. Where did they finish? First. How can a COY meet expectations? Shouldn't a COY exceed expectations? I'd give it to either Turgeon, who did very well in Maryland's first year in the league considering they were predicted to be 8th by the Big 10 sportswriters. Or, I'd give it to Painter who has exceeded expectations as Purdue was picked by the Big 10 sportwriters to finish 11th.

how do you exceed expectations if you're picked 1st? A lot of coaches/teams don't live up to expectations when they're picked high. Wisconsin has done that and Kaminsky looks like POY. He also lost Trae Jackson. Bo deserves it

You can make a case for a few coaches this year, depending on how you view the award. Says alot about the level of coaches currently in the B1G.

Good post, Walker. And now that a lot of posters have weighed-in,
I'm glad it's become clear that the BigTen Coach of the Year is..........

Fran McCaffery of Theeeee Iowa Hawkeyes and their impressive and STRONG finish.

Pomeroy rating have IOWA with the largest rating Increase in PreSeason to end of season ranking of
any BigTen team.

Fran should WIN

I think had they not lost to MN and NW he's a shoe in for coach of the year. However I think it would be hard to not give it to Turgeon. Maryland is brand new to the conference and he finishes 2nd place and beats Wisconsin to boot. Pretty impressive
Don't forget the press conference after the game, How he handles himself after Bo makes himself look like chit. Bo deserves Cow Award of the year.
Bo is just rude guy!

I think my vote would go to Turgeon. 2nd place in the league, and MD wasn't expected to be all THAT good this year, either. So they are a surprise. 2nd, probably Painter, Then Fran/Bo.

You could make an argument for Bo Ryan, but the fact that they were in the Final Four last year, and expected to be the class of the Big Ten, is why I would vote for someone else. It seems to often go to coaches who go far above and beyond what was expected.

He does indeed. But so do Fran, Painter & Turgeon.

If there were less surprise teams, or teams that didn't exceed expectations by as much as they did (Purdue & MD, IMO) then this would be more clear cut in Bo's favor, IMO.

Fran, Painter, Turgeon and, yes, Bo Ryan are the top four choices, IMO.

This is how I see it. But I drop Painter because of the easier conference schedule. I think Fran should be right there with the other 2.

My 1st thought is that we lost 3 home games but that's offset by the fact we won 6 road games. Only Wisconsin won more road games and they were ranked in the top 5 in the country to start the season. Michigan State was the same as us 6-3 on the road and 6-3 at home and they were ranked to start the season. Maryland was ranked to start the season.

Ryan did lose his starting point guard and never missed a beat. But he also lost to Rutgers when Kaminsky was hurt. So I think Kaminsky was more important than Ryan.

I think the voting will be Turgeon, Ryan, Fran and Painter in that order. But for me I can see Fran or Turgeon.

The hawks had a nice season, but they finished exactly where most predicted they would finish. They did not overachieve with the roster they have...which is a very upperclassmen dominated team.

Purdue overachieved. Wisc is a top 5 team. Michigan's coach did the most with less. Maryland overachieved. All four of those coaches did a better coaching job than Fran this year, just sayin.

QUOTE=HawkeyeWalker;1409926]Painter or Fran imo. Neither was expected to have great years, heck even HN was very doubtful in making the Tourney.

Wisc and Maryland were supposed to both be very good this year. Although I would say Turgeon has done a fantastic jon.

Since Iowa was predicted to finish 7th by the Big 10 sportswriters (See my earlier link), is Iowa finishing tied for 3rd is equal to Iowa finishing 7th?
