is anyone with DirecTV worried about saturday?

Since they came and tightened my dish up last year, I think I have maybe lost signal once, and that was during a really bad storm. Prior to that I would lose signal whenever it rained or the wind blew, the installer said if it installed properly you should very rarely lose signal.

I heard Iowa City is supposed to get 4 to 8 inches saturday....

I heard 3 inches of rain turning to all snow after midnight with and add'l 2-4 inches of snow possible followed by clear skies, strong winds, and temps falling to near 0. USE THE INTERNET.

From the NWS (for IC):

Saturday Showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 82. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

If you're losing DirecTV in the rain apparently the guy who lined it up is frickin stupid. I only lose the signal if a severe thunderstorm is overhead and that's it.

This. Seriously, the guy who came and hooked ours up after we changed to the newer dish style said the previous guy had rigged it like crap, and that if you are losing service in rain there is something wrong, a little rain shouldn't keep you from getting signal. He actually gave me his direct # and said if i had problems with that to call him directly (instead of going through directv and it taking several days) and he would personally come and see what the problem was. Since then unless there is a storm directly above me I have had no issues.

Geoota agree BHD. I have had Direct for over three years and have only lost the signal twice.... both times it was a torrential downpour and heavy wind. Very satisfied with the service.

The problem with poor installation happens when directv has more demand for new installs than there regular regional staff can handle so they hire 'outside contractors' to cover the load. By outside contractors see a-hole that is only going to work temporarily for directv and does not give a crap. Directv had a problem with this but if your system is installed properly it is more reliable than standard cable in my experience. If you have a problem with reception during wind or moderate rain call them have have them come and fix it.

And then they tack on the mandatory $30 service (or however much it is) just for a guy coming out to take a look, when it may have not been properly installed in the first place. Damn corporations, they're all corporationy.

No. I went through this personally and if it is not installed properly you won't be charged (in my case they also gave me a one of their new line of HD receivers at no charge).

Also worthy of note: If someone from directv calls you offering a free upgrade or a free trial package at the end of the call they will ask "Is anything else they can do for you?" Say "Yes, can you take 20% off my monthly bill?" They say yes everytime.

this

be nice to the installer and tip him well and he will take care of you had directv for 5 yrs and lost signal 6 times - all due to severely bad summer storms

This is why you call a local company that does the installation and sells the packages instead of dealing with DTV directly. When the local company's reputation is on the line they will do a better job then having DTV just hire some guy off the street to install it.

I used to lose my feed more with Mediacom than Directv and when it went out, it was for a lot longer. Sometimes crews working on the street, car accidents heavy rain, etc would knock it out for a long time. My satellite was well set up and it takes a real heavy thunderstorm to interrupt the signal, and even then only for a few minutes. I'm much happier with Directv.
