Is 7-5 overall record a good year?

5-7 terrible yr.

6-6 disappointing, underachieving

7-5 OK, about where a lot of people thought we would finish

8-4 overachieving, really good yr decent bowl game

9-3 miracle

10-2 dreaming

just my opinion.

SirJamAlot - Are you talking in perspective of THIS year? Based on what we lost last year, I'd say 7-5 is about par for the course. Our down years have pretty typically been 6-7 wins, so wouldn't say that record would be "good" OR "bad".

If you're talking about ANY year, then no, I would say 7-5 is rather disappointing except in a rebuilding year. 7-5, really you are barely winning more games than you are losing. I see no reason we can't be an 8-9 win program anyway - Hayden did that virtually every year from the early 80's into the early 90's.

This yr, Vandy is learning game in and game out, with Coach Ferentz you need to look at the total body of work and usually he comes out looking great! If we get to a decent bowl this yr I will be happy!

I don't have high expectations for this season - this is definitely more of a rebuilding season. It would just be a little easier to swallow if last year hadn't been such a let down.

KF's overall body of work has been good - I'm not asking for a coaching change. The thing that concerns me is that the majority of his success came in years 1-6.. Years 7-13 haven't been as good so far, but we are only a couple seasons removed from an Orange Bowl win. I'm just curious to see where we are going to end up the next 2 or 3 seasons after this one. Who knows? Maybe we'll bounce back and win 9-11 games a couple more times. Only time will tell.

I think 8-4 is an ok year. 9-3 good to great, and 7-5 below is **** poor.

With this schedule hard to imagine under an 8-4 season. We have experience everywhere sprinkled in. A good QB, great WR's, a RB people thought would get 1600 yards. Daniels and Binns on the DL, Nielsen and Morris at LB and Hyde/Prater in the secondary.
No excuses, this season with this schedule is a Failure if we don't get to 8-4.

Since our magical run of 02-04, Iowa averages 7 wins a year. I guess that's what we should expect. That's what $3 million gets you. If I sound bitter, it's because I am. I know I should back away from the ledge, but it's frustrating being in a Big 10 that is really down this year and wondering if we are even going to make it to 7 wins this year. I think the Hawks have talent, it's just different talent than our coaching staff is used to.

I had Iowa going 8-4 this year so if they end up at 7-5 it isn't a good year but not terrible either considering all the NFL talent they lost from last year.

and with all that NFL talent we had last year we were 7-5 during the regular season.

Yeah, well we aren't talking about last year.

Last year was disappointing and one that could be classified as a terrible year. But when most expected an 8-4 type of season and there isn't a lot of difference in going 7-5 or 8-4, I wouldn't consider it a terrible year with all the losses Iowa had.

I agree with you. I for some reason had false hope after seeing how down the Big 10 seemed to be in the non-con games. I was hoping we could get to 9. Anything can happen, but we looked pretty bad this past weekend. When looking at recent history, it shows that I should expect 7 or 8 wins a year from the Hawks. I guess I need to learn to manage my own expectations a little.

I don't think the Big 10 is down this yr, I think we got a huge break not playing Whisky, After the past 12 years with Coach Ferentz we have to win all the close games to have a 10 win special season, usually it comes down to a quaterback ( Banks,Stanzi,) making huge 4th quarter plays, last yr we had none, this yr we had one so far(pitt), we had chances against PSU but misfired several times,

I doubt we ever see Jo Pa again, just my opinion but I'm betting he is done after this yr, which could be bad for the Hawks because they are a sleeping Giant if they hire the right coach, hopefully they will hire an assistant.

7-5 is never a "good" year considering you get 7 at home and at least 1 of those are FCS. That means you only need to win 54.5% of your games (6 and 5) to be "good". Here's another way to see it -- 54.5% is like getting a "D" on a pretty strong grading curve! Yea, you passed (i.e got to bowl eligibility) and nice job with that :p:p:eek:

THIS year, 7-5 is exactly what I thought they would be. (Yet another shameless link to my outstandingly accurate preseason predictions ...

It doesn't make them good, it just meets expectations that they would be below average.

I had Iowa going 8-4 this year so if they end up at 7-5 it isn't a good year but not terrible either considering all the NFL talent they lost from last year.

My most optimistic prediction was 8-4 this year. For those of you predicting 9-10 wins, you have no one to blame for your disappointment right now except for yourself.

We've won 8, 11, and 9 games over the past three years. 28-11 in that span with three straight bowl wins. Mark D'Antonio is about to get a huge contract extension for an inferior record with zero bowl wins. Our athletic department is one of the only ones in the country to be entirely self-supporting and generate a profit, thanks in large part to our football program.

I'm upset that we lost, but let's keep some perspective. I'd also like to remind folks how Joe Paterno was getting savaged on this board five days ago. Look farther back, and you'll Hawkeye fans in love with Mike Stoops, Paul Rhodes, Pat Fitzgerald, and every other flavor of the month coach who has beaten Iowa. Look at how those guys have performed over the long haul and tell me who is more successful.

I apologize, I meant in the regular season we have average 7.4 wins over that time period. KF does a great job getting the team prepared for the bowl game, and the record reflects that. I love KF and all he has done for Iowa, but I am starting to worry that we are slipping from a very good program to a mediocre one. I admit, I am probably over-reacting a bit, and a 10 win year would make everything better. But we pay a lot for fear that the wrong coach could take the program in a very bad direction. I'm okay with that, but I also don't think that 8 or 9 wins during the regular season most years is too much to ask when you have one of the highest paid head coaches in the league.

Fans have short memories, it's all about what have you done for me lately. Do you think this athletic department will continue to be self-sustaining and profitable if they keep putting a team on the field only capable of 7-5 or 6-6 and continue to raise ticket prices? I have a sense that fans (including myself) are done paying ticket prices which reflect a top tier program when we are losing to teams like ISU, Minnesota, and NW year in and year out. I could give two turds about beating Maine and Louisanna Monroe each year.

I think they are down a little. Losses to teams like North Texas, North Dakota St., and Army don't help the conference rep much. Not a lot of big non-con wins either.
