Is 10 years the max time a HC should be at the same school?

A contract extension with an easy buyout clause for the school is not really a vote of confidence. It is about the same as giving no contract extension at all because that gives a recruit no confidence that the coach will be around.

I assume it would be properly cloaked in legalese, conditional provisions, convoluted options, etc. such that it would be difficult to explain to a relatively naive 17 yo why it lacks much in the way of financial guarantees. OTOH, "Coach Ferentz has a contract in place to pay him 4 million a year for the next 6 years. He's not going anywhere, Johnny" is an easy narrative.

This was the Al Davis rule when he was the smartest man in the NFL before he became senile. John Madden has the best winning percentage in the history of the NFL. He coached the Oakland Raiders for 10 years. Rather than coach another team, he retired from coaching at 42.

I don't know if a coach should be stopped at 10 years. If a coach can re-invent and produce winning teams after 10 years would you want him gone. If Saban continues at Alabama as he has should he be forced out. I think contracts extensions shouldn't be for 3 years or less for coaches after 10 years at a school so there is some security for the coach but the school won't be held hostage because they can't manage money.

I think the same should be true for anyone named "Greg", or even "Davis"....especially if they are used together......stay far away from that scenario......No one, and I mean No one should get tangled in that mess.....Oh wait......Maybe we should limit those years to 3 or maybe 4 instead.....

Why should it be up to anyone besides the employer or the employee to decide when individual wants to be retire or move on.

If you don't like the product on teh field or thinks KirFer is a phat kat, then stop watching/going to the games. Send an email to GarBar and tell him how much of a better coach *insert your favorite coaches name here* would be, and tell him you're not gonna donate any more of your big monies to the UofI until the boring gum chomper is gone.

Absolutely 10 years should be the end of a golden contract after that, there should be only short term contracts.

Although Im scared of an up and coming MAC coach, for every urban Meyer or gary pinkel there is Darrell hazel or Beckman.
