A contract extension with an easy buyout clause for the school is not really a vote of confidence. It is about the same as giving no contract extension at all because that gives a recruit no confidence that the coach will be around.
I assume it would be properly cloaked in legalese, conditional provisions, convoluted options, etc. such that it would be difficult to explain to a relatively naive 17 yo why it lacks much in the way of financial guarantees. OTOH, "Coach Ferentz has a contract in place to pay him 4 million a year for the next 6 years. He's not going anywhere, Johnny" is an easy narrative.
