Iowa's realistic next coach

As many attribute the present malaise and impending demise of Iowa FB and BB to the the NIL, our rivals across the state:

- ISU just finished a football season where they beat us on our home field, played in the conference championship, beat Miami in their bowl game and had a serious chance to be in the CFB playoff. Finished #15 in both polls (Iowa received no votes)
- ISU beat us in BB on our home court and have recently been ranked as high as #2 or #3 in the polls (Iowa not receiving votes). ISU is pretty much a given to be in, and highly ranked in the NCAA Tournament. Iowa will not be participating in the tourney.

I can't think ISU's NIL purchasing power is significantly higher than Iowa's. So what is ISU doing right that Iowa is not doing?

You serious, Clark? They got absolutely shit-housed by ASU. That was the worst beating they've taken in a long time.

It most definitely is, WAY more than Iowa's.

Google "CyTown." $250 million dollars so far and climbing just on that one project. It's absolutely insane what they're building there. Private condos, retail shopping, bars, restaurants, a plaza, a freakin 3 story medical clinic, an ampitheater, and more. All smack dab right between Hilton and Trice where the tent city used to be. They also have three basketball players ranked towards the top of the NIL value lists. They're getting paid bank. This whole thing is being done with no debt.

Just because Iowa is the supposed bigger school doesn't have anything to do with the donor base. Their fans and biggest donors are forking it over hand over fist.

ISU fans and donors are sick of being little brother and they're fronting enough money to make us little brother. And if you think about it, what is ISU primarily? It's an agricultural school. How many farmers do you know who went to ISU rather than Iowa? I know way more who went there than I do to Iowa. Now who's the most wealthy demographic as a whole in Iowa? Yep...farmers. Crop ground where I'm at averages over $20K/acre at auction. Now take that $20K times say 400 acres. Then take 400 acres times 220 bushels per acre times $4.85 per bushel. And that's before you even start talking hog and cattle operations.

tldr; there's a whole lot of money available from ISU donors. Sure, Iowa puts out a lot of doctors, lawyers, and other businessfolk, but the real money in this state comes from the ground.

When a basketball fan base demands and expects nothing, then you generally get what you expect. Apparently the fans are tired of failed March Madness’s.

ISU is a basketball school . They just had a very favorable schedule in football this year as did we, but they took advantage of it. Not to mention the general weakness of their conference.

2004 ……………. twenty-one years and still counting. WTF????

I'll always be a Hawk fan, will always follow but I'll sure be a less enthusiastic one and will likely turn away more often. Watching a pounding to the end is not my forte.
Yeah, I'll just find better ways to spend my winter nights, it's not like I'm gonna start cheering for Creighton (even tho they are 3 minutes from my house).... still nah

Like, if I'm Dix, my mom is sick, I thought about it last season but was told I was going to be the man this year....so he stuck it out. Sometimes he gives off body language out there like "Are you kidding me, I'm the only one trying" a whole F ton. I think we could lose him whether Fran leaves or not, this shit can't be fun for them.

Wonder if the guy who owns or owned some agriculture patent and I think is worth 2 billion give or take is dumping coin into the program. I think has the largest Chevy/Corvette collection which is impressive.

My bad - i was thinking of their bowl game.

Nice to read a post that speaks truth to the role of farmers in Iowa. My close friends in high school, the Metzger family members, were allowed a share of the family farms; But. They first had to graduate from ISU, or give up their rights. No joke. They got their degrees. Duh.

Here is my opinion on this:

To just call ISU the "ag school" is misguided as there are many recent alumni there that have nothing to do with agriculture. Iowa State has done a really good job the past 20+ years in trying to get in-state graduates to go to Ames. And it has worked, if you see the breakdowns almost every county in Iowa has more high school grads go to Iowa State than Iowa. Iowa State's enrollment is larger than Iowa's now. The old joke of so many students at Iowa being from Chicago and the state of Illinois may have some validity, and guess what, after graduation they go back to Illinois, Cyclone grads stay in Iowa and are more engaged in the athletics program. Go back 30 years to now and see much more Iowa State gear in public that we used to. Having successful programs only fuels that money pipeline all the more. Apathy in the Iowa basketball program has had the exact opposite effect and is why something has got to change.

Sorry, ISU is an ag school first and foremost. No one's making a joke of it and I certainly never made any insinuation whatsoever that the ag sector coming from ISU are bumpkins. Quite the contrary. ISU like all bigger universities has a wide range of graduate and undergraduate disciplines, but ag is and has always been their bread and butter. It's not just farmers. Agronomy, veterinary medicine, crop & animal scientists and researchers...you name it.

You've got the chicken and the egg switched around. In the NIL age, money is what fuels the successful programs.

Iowa is short 2 to 3 big men this season that most Iowa teams have had in the past - that's on Fran. Iowa getting their doors blown off regularly, that's on Fran. I don't really care how the rest of the season plays out, it's clear as day that Fran should be out to me, who has been a long time and staunch supporter of his. It's time, everyone knows it, I don't see any scenario in which he returns unless some sort of miracle turn around that just isn't going to happen with the make up of this team.
I feel like they're sitting pretty good with front court players.

Some days you on top, some you on bottom. Farmers, they riding a huge wave of on top. It's good to be farming today. I'm jealous
