Iowa's Offense... is it killing recruiting momentum?

So after the fiasco that was the jNW game should we start to worry about recruiting damage?

Do you think we are losing the momentum we had gained?

Seems like that is another inevitable KF trademark that leads us to these up and down swings?

Any agreement here?

Momentum, lol.. That would imply that we actually recruited well to begin with. Look no further than our skill position players to see how well we are recruiting. That and the fact that Gervase and Ward were on the field yesterday. That says a lot about how well we recruit as well. Ask yourself why any talented player, especially on offense, would ever want to come here to play football.

Was this post copied and pasted from 2007? 2011? 2012? 2013? Pick a year, any year.

Yea, I know. Lol. My point is that I think it has already affected the WR position. Fortunately for Iowa, they still have up to this point been able to recruit some decently rated QB's. I think keying on the "pro-style" QB actually benefits Iowa and they almost have to go that route with the type of QB they need.

Based on what, exactly?

The only offenses KF's ever had that could be considered competent had qb's that could make plays running. O-line university needs a guy that can make it harder on a pass-rush.

The last 5 years did nothing to promote WRs wanting to come to Iowa. I was, still am, hopeful that BF will make the offense more interesting such that some of the better WRs see Iowa as a place to play, and maybe get 1 or 2 to come, but there's a long history to overcome. I'm sure it's used against Iowa all the time in the recruiting world. For the current crew, I think there's real potential for some of these young guys. Maybe our expectations were elevated by some of the plays we've seen this year, but the young guys are too inconsistent right now. However, coming into game 8, they need to show consistency and the OC needs to as well.

I think it definitely hurts the WR position and could effect the QB position in the future if doesn't get righted.

I don't know if it is or isn't, but you can bet Max Duggan is watching very closely. Sort of like Oliver Martin, but Max has 2 seasons to critique Iowa. Max Duggan is a must get. I do think the player execution will improve; we're seeing growing pains there, in my opinion. But the play calling is a professional position and shouldn't come with a learning curve or training wheels. We don't come across as trying to score on every single possession; rather, we're trying to kill clock by gaining some field position, etc, etc. Recruits notice. Hell, 7 on 7 in HS eliminates a large qty of prospects that will even sniff at Iowa.

The articles in the past couple days make it sound like we are stockpiling Alabama type recruits fro 2018 and 2019....don't make me laugh. Don't fall for the "growing pains season" excuse, that we have all heard in regard to our Basketball Program for 25 years. Shouldn't you have just done something great, if you are suddenly making a conscious decision to take a step back to get better?

No one is making it sound like we are getting Alabama type recruits. There was one article about Nixon being offered by Alabama which was factual. I'm sure you were bitching during the 12-0 season. Get a grip, man.

Seriously? You couldn't get or understand what I was getting at?

Pro-style vs Zone read.

A lot of high schools now run zone read out of the shotgun (100%) of the time. There is a learning curve to recruit a QB that has pretty much ran zone read all his life. They don't key on those players. They can find and develop a pro-style QB that has the ability to run. Those are two separate topics. They want a QB to have the ability to run to lengthen a play more than to gain yards downfield.

Pretty much most QB's are athletes and can run to a point. They usually are some of the best athletes and players growing up and on their HS teams. Many don't run because the offense isn't designed for that or they don't want the QB taking hits, which I suspect is Ferentz's philosophy. Some are better at extending plays with their legs and feel for the rush which is the real bonus and sets them apart.

Nathan Chandler called and said "Hold those horses". He was the prototypical "statue" QB and had a great 10 win seasson. Brad Banks was the only athletic "running" QB that Ferentz had. He let him run downfield on many 3rd and 6'es for a 1st down or when the play broke down.

Chandler got 10 wins, but I don't remember the O being anything too special. They did have Gallery, though, so "qb style" was not critical that year!

As for the "pro style" thing, I agree they're probably better off going for guys that have played that style in h.s. Or at least have played some sort of non-shotgun.

Your original post said "pro style" QB, which I took as you wanting the strong-armed, immobile "statue". I'm pretty sure these days recruits are classified by the recruiting services as PP (pocket passer) or DT (dual-threat) based more on their skills / projected role (can/do they run well) than on their h.s. system. That was my disagreement w/ you.

As I said before, I think the Hawks would do well to have a guy who could be a legitimate threat to roll-out, qb draw, rpo, etc. If I could set a video-game kind of slider for the position's skills, I'd put it around 70% passer / 30% runner.

What recruiting momentum do you speak of? Rivals has them at #65. And before I get all of the recruiting rankings don't mean anything nonsense, I understand that Iowa only has 13 commitments right now and will improve. But with an early signing period in December, to me this ranking is showing that Iowa has fallen behind.....whether it is the lack of offense, coaching staff....it is a cause for worry.

If I was a recruit, I'd rather be in Ames right now watching the Clowns go down the field against TCU....much more exciting then watching Iowa fart and fall down for 4 quarters, just "hoping" to be there at the end.

It is PAINFULLY obvious that Ferments does not like or want any part of a highly recruited WR....too big, too fast, too athletic, to...um....er....urban".....seriously, what other excuse could there be? Not one F'n Dominique Douglas on our team since he has been gone...and do not bring that converted QB (McNutt) that Ferents stumbled onto by accident....TOTALLY different type of player. Ferments feels that if he has been burned by something ONE time and he is through....again, he is the most stubborn man in the world. NOBODY enjoys trying to coach up and win at the buzzer more than this boob....he wants no part of trying to recruit better, and help alleviate some of the guess work in winning.
