Iowa's newest punter, interesting backstory

Nick Phelps, former Woodbury Central prep. Was at NDSU for one season in 2018 (redshirted).

Tristan Wirfs was a phenomenal HS shot putter, with a PR of 66' 3.25".

Nick Phelps (5' 10", 215 lbs) holds the Iowa State meet record, 67' 2".

Phelps' father competed in T&F for Iowa State, his brother competed in T&F at UNI, and his sister competes in T&F at Oregon (the greatest discus thrower in state history by a mile).

He will be joining Iowa's team this spring.

That's right up there as one of the dumbest plays you'll see. I'd love to see how some of the reps they had practicing it went. 12 yr old girls can throw a football better then that. I don't even care about the interception. Just how do you do it like that?

Holy hell. Having that kind of explosive potential is completely wasted as a punter. If he can throw a shot 67'2" he can absolutely chuck an offensive or defensive linemen. I don't care if he's 5'10" 215. That kind of explosion is a generational talent. He absolutely needs to be fast tracked to fullback or nosetackle or something. Get the dude on the field. Also, I wouldn't be surprised if Joey Woody comes calling.

In the meantime, I would not be the least surprised to see him average 50 yards a punt.
