Iowa's coaching staff last night

He doesn't even care about offense! I could tell just by watching the post game handshake on TV that he was saying sorry about the last 30 points! Oh wait. ..... thought I was on the football forum. ... my bad

This has been sticking in my craw for the past 18 hours and I've finally decided to throw it out there.

There were times last night that the TV camera caught Fran, Sherm and Kirk (Speraw) sitting together on the bench looking bored, staring at the floor or straight ahead, not talking with each other, not really even following the action, not taking notes. Granted, this mostly was during the second half when the bench players were getting quality minutes against MES and the play at times was pretty sloppy. The game, well in hand, WAS boring and the relatively small number of people who turned out for the game were filing out of the arena.

Two things about it bothered me. First, whether you are 2 points ahead or 40, and playing your younger guys, it seems to me you're still coaching. The reserves were making plenty of goofs last night, and while I'm sure they appreciated the playing time and exposure, I also have to think as a player you want your coaches looking on, paying attention, caring about what you are doing. They could have used some instruction and some chewing out just as much as the starters. That attention to detail up and down the lineup will only make the team better, not only this year but for future seasons.

Second, the shots seemed to occur just as the TV guys were talking about how much the players liked each other and the coaches were like family. Really? You wouldn't have known it from those shots. I guess when I get together with my brother and sister and my parents or relatives, we talk. Seems to me those three could have been talking about what they were seeing on the floor, what they needed to work on with individual players -- especially the reserves -- in future practices.

Maybe I'm still sensitive to the shots of Lackluster sitting there head in hands, or leaning back in his chair, not really giving a damn about the way his Iowa teams were tossing the game away. I know we have a much more passionate, more skilled coach now and I should be beyond it. But still.

Anyone else have a similar reaction last night?

So do you want him to slam chairs and yell at Kyle Meyer because he missed a dunk and turned the ball over twice when we were ahead by 50? Or do you want him to win with class? Which would you prefer?

This game did nothing for the team except help them build chemistry and let the younger guys get more experience.

Actually, there were multiple situations where Fran was talking to Pete late in the second half during a dead ball. I could hear Francis and Fran from my seat coaching about defense positioning, while the backups were in.

wow.............thats all I got.

Gotta love the interwebs. If a coach screams people *****, if he doesn't scream those same people *****. The demeanor of
the coach has got to be the most insane rant of the internet posters. I agree with 1hawkeye1, this has to be some stupid troll attempt.

Please there is a time to be involved and a time to let your players find themselves and just play. As a coach sometimes you need to take yourself out of the story so your players learn to play with out looking over there shoulder all the time.

Fran was definitely relaxed. But I think this was a game where you let the kids go out and play. Fran will do enough yelling throughout the season to make up for it.

Iowa played a perfect 1st half. They took, like two bad shots and only had one bad stretch on defense where UMES had 3 offensive boards and that was on transition. There really wasn't much to say, at least in the first half.

I don't understand this thread. It is like grasping for straws.

Iowa won and by about a hundred, what else do you want?

Reads like another post of someone looking for something to complain about.

Pretty easy concept to grasp, actually. Act like you give a da mn, even when you're up 30, and coach the reserves like you do the starters. Some of those reserves will be your starters in a year or two.

Jon -please ban this poster for circumventing the profanity filter. No need for that.

For ****'s sake. How many of those reserves are going to be starters, exactly? Denning? Nope. Meyer? Maybe, but doubtful (IMO). Stokes? No.

Those are the three guys on the bench that will likely never start a game for Iowa. That leaves you with Sapp, Oglesby (who didn't play, obviously), Olaseni, McCabe, Jok and Uthoff. Guys who I don't think we have to worry about not getting enough coaching. They're all part of the rotation and will see plenty of time in games that we aren't winning in our sleep.

So seriously, just shut up about this. You're ******** for no other reason than for the sake of ********.

He should actually be banned for circumventing the profanity filter while using a word that isn't even included in the filter. So much #AFH (Amateur ******* Hour) by the OP.

Sure, issue a ban for a misplaced space made while typing on an iPad. The site does not filter out damn. As if Jon doesn't have better things to do than respond to some of the petty complaints on his site.
