Iowa's coaching staff last night

This has been sticking in my craw for the past 18 hours and I've finally decided to throw it out there.

There were times last night that the TV camera caught Fran, Sherm and Kirk (Speraw) sitting together on the bench looking bored, staring at the floor or straight ahead, not talking with each other, not really even following the action, not taking notes. Granted, this mostly was during the second half when the bench players were getting quality minutes against MES and the play at times was pretty sloppy. The game, well in hand, WAS boring and the relatively small number of people who turned out for the game were filing out of the arena.

Two things about it bothered me. First, whether you are 2 points ahead or 40, and playing your younger guys, it seems to me you're still coaching. The reserves were making plenty of goofs last night, and while I'm sure they appreciated the playing time and exposure, I also have to think as a player you want your coaches looking on, paying attention, caring about what you are doing. They could have used some instruction and some chewing out just as much as the starters. That attention to detail up and down the lineup will only make the team better, not only this year but for future seasons.

Second, the shots seemed to occur just as the TV guys were talking about how much the players liked each other and the coaches were like family. Really? You wouldn't have known it from those shots. I guess when I get together with my brother and sister and my parents or relatives, we talk. Seems to me those three could have been talking about what they were seeing on the floor, what they needed to work on with individual players -- especially the reserves -- in future practices.

Maybe I'm still sensitive to the shots of Lackluster sitting there head in hands, or leaning back in his chair, not really giving a damn about the way his Iowa teams were tossing the game away. I know we have a much more passionate, more skilled coach now and I should be beyond it. But still.

Anyone else have a similar reaction last night?

Nope. Boring game. Even more boring watching the recording.

It was boring, especially in the second half. So you just throw the ball out there and let the boys play without really paying much attention to what they're doing?

You want KF taking notes over there? They will break down video, don't sweat it.

Fran looked annoyed last night in the second half. Iowa got a bit sloppy for awhile. He was coaching when the players came to the sideline...so maybe he wanted to see them try to figure it out a bit on their own in the 2nd half, because he wasn't directing them while on the court.

In the second half I saw Fran, and other coaches, pull guys aside and just have a one-on-one during a few timeouts. I know he did with Jok and I think he also did with Woody.

The kids played their butts off, especially on defense. If you light a fire under their tails by staring at the floor...you stare at the floor.

It's kind of tough if I was coaching that game the note that I would have would be:

NEXT YEAR SCHEDULE IOWA CITY WEST JV INSTEAD OF MESU.

I'm pretty sure Fran isn't happy in IC and wants out...Heard New Mexico was looking for an Iowa coach...

I am not qualified to question the coaching techniques of the amount of coaching experience sitting on the Iowa bench. Love college basketball and watched it for over 45 years but won't even try to attempt to critique this coaching staff.

On another note I am pretty sure the Lickliter was concerned about how his players performed. Todd wanted to be as successful as every other coach. He did not come to Iowa determined to destroy the Iowa program (came damn close though) and I believe he did his best. It just wasn't good enough. I was more than ready for him to go. Two games left in the regular season and Barta on TV fully supporting him was more than I thought I could endure. With serious thought of putting up billboards around Iowa City that said FIRE LICKLiTER AND BARTA. So understand the frustration. Let's don't get carried away and assume that Todd didn't care. I'm sure if he had been very successful he would have had his eye on a more prestigious coaching job and Iowa would have been a steppingstone for him. Unfortunately it wasn't a steppingstone but a alligator that he stepped on that had him for a lunch Lickliter......yummee! :}

Relax. The second half wasn't much more than a pickup game. It's a long season and it would be a bit obnoxious to be aggressively coaching them up when up 45. He will watch some of the video and make a few points but the season really begins in the Bahamas. Fran is just keeping his BP low until our season begins.

This thread is a blatantly obvious troll attempt.

No one in their right mind would judge a coach by what they see during a few seconds of a 40 minute game.

Maybe he was doing the Don Monson thing. At least he wasn't chomping a towel like Tarkanian used to do.

Would much rather see attempts to analize why Fran appears to have lost his passion during a 40+ point win rather than our discussions of 4 years ago on why Lickliter lost to the likes of UMES.

Let me tell you from an OLD coaches perspective. Coaching is done at practice...some coaches are firm believers in letting things play out at game time. It does not mean they do not care. There was coaching taking place at time outs. I would not put too much stock in a game like that...Fran tends to get involved...LOL
