IowaLaw's Post Game Report: Illinois

A 63-0 win against a Big 10 opponent! We definitely took care of business against the last place team in the Big 10 west. Illinois came in with the 128th ranked defense in college football, and the coaches did a nice job exploiting their many weaknesses. While this takes some of the sting out of the season, it sure would have been more meaningful if we weren't coming off a 3 game losing streak against beatable teams. Ultimately, this will go down as a season of what could have been.

1. Fant Mystery Has Been Solved - It was a week of speculation. Why would Iowa's all-American tight end play just 9 downs in the second half of a close game against the division leader? Injury? No, he said he was healthy. Dog house? No, Ferentz says he has a great attitude. Better players beat him out for field position? Ha! After a week of media speculation on the staff's questionable use of talent during a 3 game losing streak, the truth becomes clear...meathead Brian, who is in over his head calling plays, simply lost track of which personnel plays on which packages. His tunnel vision was calling the packages he wanted oblivious to the fact that Fant was not a part of the packages. Kirk and Brian literally didn't notice that their biggest weapon wasn't out there in close games until they were grilled about it by the soft Iowa media. Once the error was pointed out (i.e. Cooper being in late game packages instead of Fant), Brian quickly had a "doh" moment and remedied the situation, playing Fant nearly every down of today's game. 3 catches for 54 yards and a TD should have been his stat line every game this season. Unfortunately, this personnel blunder will go down as a black eye both for Brian's competence as an offensive coordinator and the program when it comes to recruiting and the most talented players being on the field.

2. AJ Epenesa - The future is bright for Iowa's DL. AJ had a season high 8 tackles, 3.5 for a loss. Not bad for a guy who has had a relatively quiet year coming in off the bench. In one sequence, in about 60 seconds, AJ managed to record a sack, a fumble recovery for a touchdown, and a blocked punt. Watch for AJ to receive some conference/national player of the week awards.

3. Stanley's Resurgence - Well, Stanley proved my theory correct yet again. When the pressure is high and the competition is tough, Nate is not our guy because he's prone to randying around. But against fluff competition when the score is out of reach, Nate is as calm as a cucumber, with pin point accuracy and steady feet. 13-21 for 178 yards and 3 TDs (all to TEs). Nate started the game a little timid and threw a really awful interception that was 5 yards behind his intended receiver. However, instead of buckling, the Hawks took control and as soon as Iowa was comfortably in the lead, Nate loosened up and had a solid game. If only he could play this relaxed in the bigger games and down the stretch.

4. Sargent Solidifying Role as #1 RB - The Hawks have struggled all year with the running game. We have used 3 mediocre backs interchangeably, with none distinguishing themselves as the top dog. Today, Sargent stepped up and became the first back to surpass 100 yards in a game. 17 rushes for 121 yards (7.1 ypc). While I'd love to say Sargent is far and away the best back on the team, that isn't clear. But I do think he performed well enough to solidify his role as the starter going into 2019. Fingers crossed that the freshmen from Georgia comes in next year and beats out everyone we currently have on the roster.

5. Hooker's Role Going Forward? - Hooker had another solid outing. 3 solo tackles, 1 int, 1 pass breakup, a nice punt return, and seemed to be all over the field. The question remains: is he a LB or safety going forward? Today, he was listed as the starting SS. Nick Niemann was in the lineup as OLB. The problem is, Hooker was all over the field and Niemann, Hockaday, and Welch barely made an impact.

6. Groeneweg's Big Game - Groeneweg played like he did back when he was playing against DII competition. 6 punt returns for an average of 18 yards per return! Like with Stanley, if only Groeneweg could have had a game like he did against lowly Illinois running a kick back for a touchdown when we were up by 30 when it counted (like against Penn State, when he was fair catching on our own 3 yard line), but we will certainly take it.

7. Why is Raestetter STILL Getting All Punter Reps? - Let me get this straight, the senior walk-on that ranked 117 in the NCAA in punting last year and is 12th in the Big 10 this year continues to get all reps at punter when Iowa has a scholarship sophomore who has yet to see the field all season. Today, Raestetter averaged just 2 yards more per punt than our QB, who pooch punted early in the game. This is a poor coaching job to not get the underclassmen a rep or two to see what he can do. Perhaps if the soft local media would bring this deficiency to the coaching staff's attention like they finally brought Fant's lack of usage to their attention, this might be corrected.

Figures. We “used up” all of Eppy and Fants snaps this week (when we didn’t need them). Now we gotta limit them to 15-18 next week so we can lose 17-13 to Debby. It’s the KF way

Agree on #1, not playing Fant every down, every game, might be the biggest blunder of the KF era. You don’t leave a projected #11 pick on the bench, especially considering who we have as alternatives. For #3, you’re focusing too much on Stanley and not enough on the WRs. When we play bad teams our WRs finally matchup OK and we can get away with not playing a player like Fant.

Don't see #1 the same way. I see it as punishment for something. KF has simply been deflecting the details of the issue out of protection for Fant. His punishment was reduced playing time. There's nothing to be gained by citing to the public what caused it. Internal issues will be handled internally.

No matter what caused it I will always be left with the impression of being cheated as a fan......... for losing a couple games in Fant's absence where he possibly could have made the difference. We never saw our best weapons on the field and a coach's conscious decision was the cause in my opinion.

P.S. So now the irony of all this is that Fant has been recently quoted as saying he might stick around another year!

My theory is that Fant sucks blocking 8-9 man fronts...so we sit him during our "bang our heads against the wall" game plans...(i.e. against everyone we play).

I'd say your assessment of the LB is off the mark. Welsh didn't play until the end. Colbert was really solid and was in perfect position all game long. Colbert may be the next great Iowa linebacker. I love Hooker coming down to LB in passing situations. He's a big play defender and you are getting him in position to make plays.

The blocking issue (or some other shortfall as identified by someone) has entered my head. Maybe their way of trying to make him a better player especially for his draft stock and future in the NFL (maybe even based on some scouts' feedback). He's being given a "learning opportunity". If that's the case it sure seems like there might have better ways to go about "teaching" besides punishing the team and fans in a sense. Oh well, what's done is done.

I think the punter situation is more kirk being slow to take out guys who are struggling. We've seen this in games this year with Stanley and others. Rastetter if you remember was actually doing really well at the beginning of the year. He kinda fell apart somewhere around the psu game when everybody else kinda started struggling too, but he was doing great at the beginning of the year. I think because he's reverted back to last years form the last several games, especially the ones we lost, everybody is grouping his year in like that. Beginning of the year it made sense he was starting, he was putting most every punt inside the 20 all the time. Add to that the gadget plays and he had been having a real nice season. I agree with you though, it might be time to get gersonde a shot.

I think Nate has it in him, but he puts too much on himself in big moments and big games. If he wants to have the kinda career his arm and mind can have he needs to stop pressing. In big moments and big games he loses his mechanics, and falls apart. Though I don't think he should be pulled every time he starts struggling, I think when somebody has struggled on a consistent basis in games you give the backup a series to let your starter shake out the cobwebs then put him back in there.

Young I think has the biggest nfl upside. I don't know why he doesn't play more. I don't think its the standard reasons you hear on this site....coaches don't want him to play well, coaches don't want to win. I do think its probably something i'm missing football related. His blocking is getting better, and he's doing better in passing formations. I thought he sure earned more playing time with his play Saturday but then again, so did sargent. Sargent right now is our most complete back, young is are best runner, and ikm is the one the coaches think is our best overall back, but he can't stay healthy. Also there is no way goodson sees the field as a running back next year barring minor catastrophes. He'll need a year of college conditioning first.

I was hoping for something a little more critical from IowaLawWasRight. We need to remember all the mistakes made in the game, the interception in the first half, the dropped passes and throw-aways, players whiffing on tackle attempts, the lack of playmakers.

IowaLaw nailed it this week. The OC analysis is genius. Larry Station also made a great point re: HC's unwillingness to pull SOME starters who are struggling. This has been common issue throughout his tenure. What is perplexing is that other players get yanked quickly.

Go along with you on most things except running back. I think Young is the best back we have. For some reason the coaches don't see it that way. He needs more snaps.
This wouldn't be the first time obvious personnel matters were missed.

Hwk23 - I think you're mistaken saying that our WRs step up against bad competition. Hell, even in this week's 63 point shellacking against Illinois, the WRs were nowhere to be found. Brandon Smith led WRs with 3 receptions, and no other WR had more than 1 catch. How is that possible when we have 10 scholarship WRs and we score that many points? It's a product of a scared and conservative QB, not the WRs. At least Easely has proven to be able to catch the ball. He just didn't get targets.

Ohhawk - You think Fant starting, but only playing 1/3 of the snaps is evidence of a Kirk punishment? Trust me, if someone is in Kirk's dog house, you would know it. The guy would vanish (Amani Jones, or Aaron Mends last year), not stay in the starting lineup. Brian simply lost track of which personnel plays on which formations and kept calling the heavy blocking formations in close games. Remember, Brian is a PE major who probably has never even prepared a resume because his jobs were handed to him. With his experience, he has no business calling plays, and the stats back that up. You are right to feel cheated as a fan. This team has enough talent to have 10 wins right now. Special teams and offensive personnel blunders have been a major issue.

WinOne - my assessment was that the starting LBs, Niemann, Welch, & Hockaday, had a bad game. You disagree? You are correct that Colbert played well, as he led all LBs in tackles and made some plays. Hooker was head and shoulders above them all, and he's not even a LB. Recruiting at that position has been way off lately, and the guys just don't have any athleticism like in years past (of course, Mends and Jones would have changed that this year).

Wash - you are not incorrect to say that Young is Iowa's best back. He leads the team in yards per carry and has the only long run of the season for the Hawks (40 yards). Sargent leads the team in yards and touchdowns. Kelly-Martin is the guy the coaches think is the best. So really, none have distinguished themselves to be the star #1 back on the squad. Again, I don't think any of them have the skill set to be that back, so I am hoping the RB recruit coming in next year is that guy.

Larrystation - Kirk is selectively slow to pull starters. We saw what he did with our middle linebacker in the 3rd series of game 1. Yet with our punter, 20 yard line drive after 20 yard line drive do not merit pulling Rastatter even for 1 series. I'll correct your statement...Kirk is slow to pull his favorites. When it's a guy he doesn't like, the guy will be pulled so fast that his cleats are left behind.

I like Young as our starter but didnt Sargeant have a long TD something like 35 yards last weekend??

I see Young and Sargeant as co-#1s who should be getting about even number of carries. Young has even showed some better one cut cutback moves than the other two.

I wouldnt mind seeing IKM in the slot some against NEbby and in the bowl as he is supposed to have good hands. If he can make really good cuts and run routes well he could take over for easley and it might be a better thing for IKM and the pros
