You can't ask for more than a dominating shut-out win on a crisp Homecoming afternoon. We played like the double digit favorite we were without looking past our opponent for next week's showdown against Penn State. A win next week, and this team can legitimately start talking about the Big 10 championships and a shot at the playoffs!

1. Stanley - Just when he seems to have turned a corner after a rough start to the season, he comes out and lays an egg. 11 of 22 for 86 yards and 1 head scratching interception. It was windy, so it makes sense that the majority of throws were thrown at or behind the line of scrimmage. But even those gimme tosses were mostly thrown behind the intended receiver. By comparison, mediocre Alex Hornibrook was 13 of 22 for 188 yrds in a snow storm in Wisc today. Kudos to Brian F for getting my memo and allowing the backup QBs some work in a blow out.

2. RB Play - The Hawks had 52 carries today in a run-first game. I was hoping to see someone come away with a 100 yard performance. Kelly-Martin nearly made it with 24 carries for 98 yrds. Sargent added 54 more, gaining 5.4 yrds per carry. Given Smith-Marsette's skill set and lack of targets in the receiving game, it would make sense to put the ball in his hands more in the run game. He had 1 carry for 16 yrds today and should be able to run that same play 2-3 times per game.

3. WR No-Shows - We threw the ball 24 times, but Smith and Smith-Marsette combined for just 2 catches. If these guys can make circus 1 handed grabs, surely they are capable of catching 5-10 ordinary passes per game as well? It all starts with running good routes and getting open.

4. Consistent TE Play - Our TEs combined for 6 catches, and played another solid game. While it's a treat having a unique threat like Fant on the team, he had another game where he had as many catches (3) as drops (3). It's time for him to quit randying around and just play the game. Stop worrying about NFL dollars and catching more touchdowns, and play like a blue collar Iowa TE. Do that, and the rest will come.

5. DL Dominance - Maryland had just 3 series in the entire first half! How does that happen? Hesse and Epenesa subbed in and out and combined for 8 tackles, 4 tackles for loss, and 2 sacks. Goldston had a big game, with 3 tackles and a TFL. Maryland came in as one of the top 20 rushing attacks in the country, but managed just 68 rushing yards and 47 passing yards. There is so much depth on this DL that every week another guy steps up.

6. Recinos - Our kicker has had a quiet year, for the most part. This week, despite the strong wind, he stepped up and hit 3 of 3 field goals when the game was still very much in doubt. Kudos to the kicking game.

7. Moss - How about my boy Riley Moss. The tv announcers referred to him as a walk-on, but I believe he was a greyshirt who picked up one of our last scholarships instead of playing DII football last year. He stepped up yet again today, with 3 tackles and 2 pass breakups. Who would have guessed Moss would have started the majority of games at CB last summer when we seemingly had more cb depth than any other position?

1. The wind was a lot worse than you realize. Iowa doesn’t pass when they don’t need to. Papa Ferentz doesn’t want to throw the ball if it’s not necessary. 20 years of Ferentzball should have taught you that by now.

2. Wait, did you just complain about 200+ yards split between a bunch of guys because you wanted one of them to get 100?

3. Again, wind. It was bad. You clearly weren’t there and that’s fine, but the wind was really nasty. It’s the reason we didn’t take any real deep shots. If we can get 300+ yards of offense and a shutout for the defense then there’s really no reason to complain. We’re still talking about Iowa after all. No big mistakes and we pounded them on the ground? The defense is one of the top in the country? Get excited.

4. I think you’re reading too far into this. Fant’s hands simply aren’t as good as we would like. Hopefully they get better. The kid drops more balls than he should.

5. DL good, Defense good. Look at us agreeing!

Your hatred for the receivers is weird. I looked and Iowa’s WR have over 50% of the teams receptions this season. For comparison, New England receivers have 47% of their team receptions and they only have one awesome TE. If you ask me, BF is doing a great job of spreading the ball and utilizing the guys they have. It’s not the video game game plan you seem to be used to.

Is he really complaining about the receivers and passing game today? Dude... Just don't. We won that game pretty much EXACTLY how papa KF would draw it up on a crazy windy day. Iowa had ZERO PENALTIES. None at all. Not even any that were declined. Unreal. Iowa smoked them in TOP. You can't do that and complain about the offense to any degree. We did what it took to win the game. I guess you can nit pick and say we shoulda got TDs instead of fgs in the first half but with how our D was playing clearly that didn't end up mattering. As far as breaking down the QB or receivers in this game just throw it out the window. Break this down as a team win. Defense just totally shut down an O that had been running the ball on everyone they've played till now. I mean holy crap that was big time and I would hope that performance will be turning some heads on the national level.

Nice, clean game, with few penalties.

Dominate the trenches to win, especially in a "bad weather" game.

Iowa is getting deep: DL, OL, QB, RB, LB, Secondary.

Lack of injuries have been a good news story.

The second of the two "big games" this season vs PSU, looms. Just do it.

BTW...when a received punt now lands without being caught, the Iowa special teams players treat it like a hand grenade...get the hell out of the way!!! Hot round on the ground!

On a blustery day like this no way were we going to see a repeat from last week with Stanley tossing 6 TDs. As it was Brandon Smith again showed brilliance emerging when his number was called. He's a highlight reel in the making. The D is damn near awe-inspiring. All in all great game!

One big thing I see in the running game. These guys aren't bad. They are young I get it. But they aren't the threat that Akrum Wadley was. With Akrum there was always the anticipation that he would break a long run.

Your shitty-ish analyses make you sound like a minor league, wannabe Skip Bayless.

They reek of someone who watches highlights instead of actual games, and who really doesn’t understand the game he’s analyzing.

I’m sure you’re a really nice guy and a good elder law attorney, but you should probably spend more time on Berdella’s estate than analyzing games you don’t know and understand well.

You’re so predictable on Stanley, ya think the game call and weather had anything to do with it? I bet he’s now not an NFL prospect to?
With the exception of the QB, his analysis is pretty could. Methinks IowaLaw played QB, at least in his recliner.

^^ correct, Stanley did not lay an egg as the OP says, he made a great throw to get the first TD and made a handful of drive sustaining throws. he also had some bad footwork and rushed a couple of throws that can be fixed and had a very nice QB draw for a first down leading to a score.

Easley had at least one reception but I think 2 so that is 4 of 11 receptions to WRs,

Yes OP, Easley is a WR.

The defense just shut down a very good running offense so I agree there.

Time to sit back and enjoy this team, these past wins, and if they play up to ability maybe win these last 5 games

Like the analysis. Don't think he's 'complaining'--just stating facts. Even a coach, after a 50-point win, doesn't go to locker room and pat everyone on the back. Instead, finds areas that could be improved. Solid win, considering conditions. KF is really becoming a great coach in 'conditions'.

Stanley laid an egg???. Lmao you go out in play catch in 30mph winds and steady 50+ mph wind gusts. How stupid.

Yeah....

I’m as critical of this staff as anyone but the weather was a major factor. Stanley is fine. He can still improve but he looked pretty great the last few weeks. Today was the wind

And i was happy with Brian’s playcalling. He went with high completion passes, and even then the wind (and Fant dropping easy ones) caused so many issues.

This team has a chance to be great. Root for them versus the stats at this point.

My fingers are crossed that we don’t come out with Kirk 3.0 offense and we continue with Kirk 1.0 offense against PSU

I think it’s very hard on a day like this to make any firm conclusions about the passing game. The most I’d say is that they need to do some teaching with the qbs in general about throwing into difficult conditions like today, cuz thats maybe the only major ding I have, that it did look like the wind got into Stanley’s head with him shorting a couple throws, but they also clearly told him to play it safe.

Extremely bad weather is difficult for:

QBs

Punters

Place kickers 3-3 !

They are games that are won and lost in the trenches, a battle of wills.

The worse the weather, the more the advantage for the mentally tough team.

The wind was tough for sure, but, honestly, Stanley threw some pretty hideous balls. That happens.

Just stop. You aren't even competent at re-posting someone else's analysis. And are you not able to give B Smith props for that circus catch, beyond mentioning it in a complaint about good routes and getting open on a day when their main function was nullified by 40 mph winds?
