Iowa Will Be Fine & Win Some Conf Games

One interesting point. Last night it was mentioned by the announcers that Iowa had the toughest schedule in the nation up until this point (Prob conference schedule). This is by the win-loss % of the teams that they have played & was something like a 99-18 record.

Michigan was also up in the top 5.

Iowa looks like they are starting to come together & running the floor well together. It seems they are jelling. They will win some conference games & I think the future looks bright.

I agree, the way we handled IU yesterday gives me hope that we'll win at least a couple more games. Still a tough road to hoe, but I think better teams than we are would still have a lousy conference record against the competition we played the first 6 games.

The Big10 is a very healthy conference at the current time with a lot of quality young players. Yes, Iowa beat a depleted Indiana team but the way they played looked promising. I don't put too much weight on this particular win.

I guess the point I wanted to make is that I think the young players are coming together & reading each other better. This coupled with the style they play & the tough conference schedule bodes well for the rest of the year.

I think this team will have 1-2 top notch conference quality wins sometime this year. They are going to knock-off someone they aren't supposed to. I'm looking at Feb. 2, Michigan State. I've got that on my calender for them.

Now, if they can get that fancy win on the road, well, that might be enough to get them over the hump.:D

Iowa plays real well against teams of approximate equal "athleticness" (including height) and not so well when they are outgunned/outsized.

Not a surprise, but I think it bodes well for the future as Fran elevates the program.

Iowa actually played a conference game without giving up a large run and avoided their famous stretches of play when they look like they have no idea what they are doing. Unfortunately Indiana didn't exactly have the horses in the stable to make that run. However, it was a good showing, but can they play that well against better oppostition night in and night out has yet to be proven.
Great showing, but still not convinced yet. I'm still in the mindset that we're on the right track, but nowhere near the point of being competitive night in and night out.

I am really enjoying Fran's style of basketball. Back to back jams by May, was outstanding. We are just a lot more competitive and fun to watch this year.

To be fair, Indiana is a bad team and they were missing one of their better players.

Still, one thing I found encouraging was that last game was the first time I really felt Iowa played in the style that Coach McCaffery will eventually want to play all the time once he gets the program going the way he wants. A lot of scoring on secondary breaks, some pressing, some dunks off turnovers, a lot of different players taking turns scoring. Very aggressive all the way around.

Boy. Let me revisit this thread. It doesn't happen to me too often. I'll be a little narcacistic & pat myself on the back once. :p

Two good calls, I think you are also right that it gets them over the hump. Props to you, MelroseGuy!!!

Keep in mind that the "depleted" Indiana squad just beat a ranked Minnesota team with the very same players that played against Iowa. Fact is Iowa fought through adversity and played hard for forty minutes and showed al ot of mental toughness. I don't know how many more wins they get, but I know they will play hard and not stop trying. Hard works gets wins like the one against Indiana. It was still a road game in a tough atmosphere and the Hawks played through it.

This is what I think is key for this team & will pay dividends going forward. This kind of win on the road is what they needed. :)
