Huge series for the Hawkeyes, they really could use a sweep here. This series should be a good opportunity for the pitchers to pad their stats as Rutgers is not a good hitting team. But, as usual, the Hawkeyes are gonna have to find a way to score some runs.

Sunday's game will be broadcast on BTN!! They start an hour before the Cubs game.

SCOUTING RUTGERS
• The Scarlet Knights have won two straight games and own an 8-17 overall record, including a 1-2 mark in the Big Ten.
• Rutgers' batting average (.227), ERA (5.03), and fielding percentage (.949) all rank in the bottom three of the Big Ten.
• On the offensive end, Rutgers is led by second baseman Tim Dezzi, who is hitting .322 (29-for-90) with a .419 on-base percentage. Dezzi is the only Scarlet Knight hitting above .300.
• The Rutgers pitching staff has allowed 254 hits (.281 BAA) and struck out 199 batters in 225 1/3 innings.
• LHP Harry Rutkowski (0-2, 2.51 ERA) will start Friday followed by RHP Tommy Genuario (1-1, 2.13 ERA) in game two, and LHP Tevin Murray (0-3, 5.08 ERA) in the series finale.
• Genuario's 2.13 ERA is eighth-best in the Big Ten and his .221 batting average against leads the team. It will be the right-hander's second start of the season.

Iowa Takes Series Opener From Rutgers


IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Behind 6 1/3 shutout innings from junior Cole McDonald and a four-run sixth inning highlighted by Izaya Fullard’s three-run home run, the University of Iowa baseball team took the series opener, 6-1, over Rutgers on Friday night at Duane Banks Field.


What started as a pitcher’s duel between McDonald and Rutgers’ Harry Rutkowski, ended with a barrage of hits from the Hawkeye offense.


McDonald, who threw a season-high 117 pitches, worked around seven hits and three walks to throw his first scoreless start of the season. The New Hampton, Iowa, native struck out at least one batter in every inning to finish the game with eight strikeouts.


“I felt really good,” McDonald said. “My goal was to go out there and pound the zone with all my pitches. I felt like I was effective; working both sides of the plate and mixing speeds. That’s what made me effective tonight, especially to get out of some situations that I put myself in.


“Cole’s one of our toughest kids, hardest workers, and captain,” said head coach Rick Heller on McDonald’s ability to work out of numerous jams. “He’s there for a reason and that’s what you expect of your Friday night guy.”


Iowa’s offense finally got to Rutkowski in the sixth inning. Senior Chris Whelan, who went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and a walk, singled to left with one out, and senior Mitchell Boe followed with a walk. Junior Austin Martin doubled to left center field for his second hit of the game to push across the game’s first run.


Fullard kept Iowa’s offensive output going with a towering three-run home run to left field over the scoreboard, putting the Hawkeyes ahead 4-0 through six innings.


“It was special,” said Fullard, who hit his second career home run and first at home. “I’ve always wanted to be a Hawk. To be able to hit my first home run here, especially in a game like this -- in Big Ten play -- it was a dream come true.”


Boe tacked on two insurance runs in the eighth inning on a two-out, two-RBI double to the right center field gap.


Junior Trace Hoffman pitched the final 2 2/3 innings to close out the game and earn the first save of his career.

“We came out ready to play. We were focused and had good intensity, but were also having fun and playing loose on the other side, too. (Harry) Rutkowski was really good for Rutgers, as advertised. He really held us down. Cole (McDonald) did a great job and gave us a good start. Rutgers hitters battled with two strikes and put us in some jams that Cole was able to work out of.


“It’s a lot easier to score when you get some extra-base hits. We hadn’t been doing a lot of that lately, so that was a real positive.”


OF NOTE…

  • McDonald has struck out 24 batters over his last three starts and his ERA sits at a season-best 4.30.
  • Martin recorded his second straight multi-hit game to increase his season total to a team-high 13. Whelan and Fullard also recorded multi-hit games.
  • Hoffman became the fourth Hawkeye to earn a save this season.
  • Ben Norman’s career-high 15-game on-base streak was snapped after an 0-for-4 night.

Schedule Change: Iowa to Play Saturday Doubleheader



IOWA CITY, Iowa – With rain and thunderstorms forecasted for Sunday, the University of Iowa baseball team will play a Saturday doubleheader against Rutgers at Duane Banks Field. Game one will begin at the originally scheduled time of 2:05 p.m. (CT) followed by the series finale, 30 minutes at the conclusion of the first game.



The Hawkeyes won the opening game of the series, 6-1, on Friday night.



Game three was slated be televised on BTN. The game will now be streamed on BTN Plus on BTN2Go.
 




It does suck. I was going to go over to the game tomorrow. Not sure I can make it today.

Hawkeyes Split Doubleheader, Win Series Over Rutgers



IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The University of Iowa baseball team (18-12, 5-4) split Saturday’s doubleheader at Duane Banks Field with Rutgers (9-19, 2-4) to win its second straight Big Ten series. Iowa won the first game, 9-5, but dropped game two, 15-3.


The loss in the nightcap snapped Iowa’s five-game conference winning streak.


Game 1 | Iowa 9, Rutgers 5


The Hawkeyes pounded out 12 hits -- six for extra bases – to win game one, 9-5. Rutgers matched Iowa with 12 hits, but the Scarlet Knights left nine runners on base.


Iowa’s four-run sixth inning extended Iowa’s early lead to 7-1. The Hawkeye sixth that featured four hits, a walk, and a hit-by pitch was station to station. Ben Norman, Zeb Adreon, Matthew Sosa, and Mitchell Boe all drove in runs during the frame.


Rutgers answered with a four-run seventh inning to cut the deficit to two through seven.


Adreon, a junior first baseman, capped off his career day and put the game away with two insurance runs in the bottom of the seventh on a two-out, two-RBI double to put Iowa on top 9-5. The Pleasantville, Iowa, native finished the day going 3-for-3 with a walk, two doubles, and a career-high four RBIs.


Sophomore Cam Baumann (2-2) was the winning pitcher after going 6 1/3 innings, allowing three runs on eight hits and one walk. The left-hander bounced back from a shaky first inning where he gave up three hits.


Baumann couldn’t complete the seventh and was relieved by senior Jason Foster, who faced three batters without retiring an out.


Redshirt junior Grant Leonard entered in the seventh with the bases loaded and only one out, allowing one inherited runner to score. Leonard pitched the final 2 2/3 innings to earn his seventh save of the season.


Iowa scored one run in three of the first four innings, including a solo home run by senior Tanner Wetrich in the second. It was Wetrich’s third home run of the season.

“The first game could have went either way. We broke it open. Zeb (Adreon) had a good game, (Matthew) Sosa had a good game -- a lot of guys had a good game in game one.”


Game 2 | Rutgers 15, Iowa 3


Junior Grant Judkins (3-3) allowed five unearned runs in the first inning and Iowa was never able to recover, falling 15-3 in the nightcap of the doubleheader.


The Scarlet Knights had 15 hits with two home runs, while Iowa had seven hits, committed four errors, and left 11 runners on base.


Judkins gave up seven hits and battled through five innings before being relieved by Duncan Davitt in the sixth inning. Four other Hawkeye pitchers -- Kyle Shimp, Drew Irvine, Clayton Nettleton, and Shane Ritter -- saw relief innings.


In the sixth inning, junior Ben Norman came around to score on an RBI-ground out by Connor McCaffery, which cut Iowa’s defect to five, trailing 7-2. Iowa forced three pitching changes in the sixth, but could never spark much of a comeback.


Rutgers scored eight runs in the final three innings, including five in the eighth to put the game completely out of reach.


Offensively, Wetrich and Sosa each registered multi-hit games from the bottom of the order.

“It’s always disappointing when you split a doubleheader and lose the back end, especially when you lose it the way we did. Tip your hat to Rutgers. They bounced back and swung the bats well. They wanted it and played hard.


“We challenged the team to go out and play even harder than game one. We didn’t get a great start out of Grant (Judkins). We were just down too much. We’d fight here and there, stranded a lot of runners and didn’t get the big hit, which had a lot do to with the quality of pitching that Rutgers threw at us.”


OF NOTE…

  • A season-high 1,701 fans were in attendance for Saturday's doubleheader.
  • Wetrich finished the doubleheader 3-for-7 with three runs scored, a home run, and an RBI.
  • Leonard has not allowed a run since taking the loss against Indiana on March 22. Leonard’s scoreless innings streak is up to seven innings and his ERA sits at 1.69.
  • Baumann has gone six or more innings in his last two starts, earning the win in both.
UP NEXT

Iowa resumes play with a midweek game at Bradley on April 10 at 7 p.m. (CT). The Hawkeyes won their first matchup against the Braves, 4-2, earlier this season at home.
