Iowa vs Nebraska football recruiting

Yesterday's article in Hawkcentral, Coach Ferentz mentioned that at Iowa we have a some disadvantages in recruiting.

Suchomel: New facility moves Hawks forward | Hawk Central

“The bottom line is that we face some inherent disadvantages in recruiting, be it location and population,â€￾ Ferentz said.

I'm a huge Ferentz supporter and I think he's a lot better coach than Pelini. He also does a great job of developing players. In addition, seems to have a lot of respect from NFL personal.

With all that said, shouldn't we be on par with Nebraska in terms of recruiting?

Since the 90's, what advantages does Nebraska have over us?

Nebby's facilities are second to none. Not saying Iowa doesn't have nice facilities, but Nebby can compete with the elite in that department.

What follows is the list of the 10 winningest programs in the history of the game, ranked by total wins. The list is current through the end of the 2010 season.
1. Michigan: 888-306-38
2. Texas: 853-326-34
3. Notre Dame: 845-296-42
4. Nebraska: 836-345-41
5. Ohio State: 825-315-53
6. Alabama: 825-317-43
7. Penn State 821-355-43
8. Oklahoma: 806-308-53
9. Tennessee: 788-340-55
10. USC: 784-309-54

On the field, Iowa has had more success than Neb over past decade (no I'm not talking head-to-head). But as stated above, Nebraska is a much bigger name nationally and still carries a lot of weight.

I blame Evy, back in the late 50s Iowa was way ahead of Nebraska in football. Then Evy decided he wanted to be AD and screwed up the program. Nebraska hired Devaney who turned the football program around and the rest is history. Evy made some horrible moves in the 60s and had he left Jerry Burns alone or remained coach himself Iowa could have been the elite football program in the midwest.

Well, there's no arguing this point. Nebraska has a ton of tradition. But to do that with a state population even less than what Iowa has (poor recruiting grounds) tells me that there's hope that Iowa can also build it's own brand of tradition.

Iowa doesn't have the title lineage that Nebraska has. The 34+ years in a row when Nebraska won 9 or more games, etc...Nebraska has similar geographic and demographic obstacles, but they also have a national name due to their tradition that Iowa does not have.

Aren't 700 of those wins against ISU.?

So, if you're a recruit from out in CA and you have 2 schools (Nebraska & Iowa) you're deciding between. Why would you go to Nebraska over Iowa? Is it because of their tradition? Or, would you be more inclined to go to Iowa due to our player development program, success of our players getting in the NFL, and having a head coach that is well respected in the NFL?

For me the latter. Especially if the NFL is the goal.

There's no excuse for Nebraska having better facilities. The new practice facility better put us at least on par with their facilities. If not, someone isn't doing their job correctly.

I do not think Nebraska has any troubles getting players into the NFL. If I took off my black and gold glasses off for a second and was basing my decision on the traditions of each school then I would have to admit Nebraska has a leg up. They also have a big leg up with their facilities. Hopefully Iowa would have another angle to offer someone from California to go head to head against Nebraska for their services.
