Iowa-UNI Recap

Good article from Hawkcentral. Iowa had RT in 8 matches and accumulated 17:34 total. Also, Iowa led TDs 30 to 1. Looked good team-wise, although it's been mentioned about St John and Gambrall gassing in their matches. Chiri's performance was a highlight after the way he performed against ISU and MSU. I was disappointed in Ballweg since he's set the bar high in his previous matches, but he handled his opponent the entire match. 165 is the biggest disappointment to me. I don't think Janssen looked any better than Kerr would have looked. Brands has a tough decision on who finally gets this spot.

Good quote from Schwab:
"If you guys think I’m feeling sorry for myself then you guys are crazy,†Schwab said. “You guys are crazy if you think I’m feeling sorry for myself because we got our tails whipped out there. That’s not the case at all. I’m more motivated than ever. It doesn’t matter about me, though. It matters with our guys.â€

No, of course it isn't but give Schwab time. Clearly there is still a lot of lasting effects of Penrith still there with many of the wrestlers. Schwab has to create an entirely different culture. it takes time. He'll be able to get good kids to go there and some of the young studs like Wolfensperger, Noble, etc will have bought in from day one. I think he's going to be a homerun there in a couple years. But as we all saw last night, he has plenty of work to do.

I read that Long wanted to transfer to UNI but was not allowed to transfer to any Iowa school or Big 12 school. Don't know if it's true, but I'm not sure why he'd be barred from transferring to UNI. That would've helped Schwab's efforts and got some more fire in the room.

yea im surprised he didn't go there because thats where his brother went

my guess afhawk that what youve heard is correct

I'm pretty sure that Andrew Long was given his full release some time ago and could have went anywhere he wanted that wanted him too. Why would ISU block UNI but not block Penn State and Cael??

Not sure how Jannsen winning 4-0 at 165 was any more of a disapointment than the 3-0 at 141, 4-2 at 184 and 2-0 at 285, he at least had a TD while 141 and 285 did not. Kerr did not have a TD vs ISU and only managed a reversal vs MSU. Pickeral is probably one of their better guys and only lost 5-1 to top 5 ranked Asper from Maryland. Facts are we don't know how Kerr would have looked vs Pickerall but we do know he did nothing but sit on his rear trying to funk out of leg shots in his previous 2 matches. I'd rather watch a TD and a hard ride over that anyday.

Factory 51..... Well you got to watch a takedown and a hard ride with 141. Ballweg at 141 DID have a takedown. He rode out Senzee the whole 2nd period, then he chose neutral to start the 3rd. He got a quick takedown even though Gable and Gibbons called it a reversal. After the takedown he looked like he was going to cut the kid loose and play takedown and release, but instead he looked over to the bench and I guess the coaches told him to ride because that's what he did. I figured the Coaches told some of the guys to work on riding tough on top rather than run up the score. Figured they didn't want to embarrass Schwab or anybody. The kid Ballweg wrestled was a 4xState Champion here in Missouri and a NJCAA Champion his Fr. year before he transferred to UNI. Don't remember which one for sure, I think it was the kid McD wrestled, that was a NJCAA Champion also. Some of the UNI kids were pretty good wrestlers, just got outworked. Give Schwab some time with'em. Some of them were pretty young, like our guys. They'll get better. The meet as of right now, 12:43 AM Saturday morning is still available to view on the link at IPTV in case you want to refresh your memory of any of the matches.

My point was not that I had issue with 141, 184 and 285 because I did not. My point was why the original poster would have a negative view of the 165 pound match when it was really not much different that the other ones. I was going off what the announcers said in the Ballweg match as per the TD vs a reversal.

Factory - it's a disappointment because Janssen's performance didn't resolve anything. I'm looking for separation between Kerr and Janssen so there's a clear starter who can focus on the opponent and not whether they're going to be the starter. There's been a lot of criticism on Kerr's performance, and rightfully so, but I wasn't impressed with Janssen either. Like I said earlier, Brands has a tough decision on who finally gets this spot.

Janssen wrestled fine but didn't make a case for being the starter the way that Ramos has at 33. I was thinking when I was watching Janssen's match that if it were Kerr who was wrestling that way, people would be saying "Same old Kerr." I think one of the commentators described it as a workman-like effort, and that sums it up. Neither guy seems interested in doing more than the minimum required to win. For two guys who have yet to solidify their spot in the lineup, that is troubling.

As per what Ramos has done, I am happy with how he has looked which has been great but he has yet to wrestle anyone I consider to be even average. I'm curious to see him vs a decent guy.

If anyone is waiting for either Kerr or Jannsen to go TD and release on people and run up big scores then you will be waiting a long time. Kerr's idea of offence is trying to funk a Td when a guys shoots on him and is not much from the top as far as rideing or turning people. Jannsen is average from his feet and is going to be methodical on TDs and most often look to do a lot of work from top as that is where he is best although he is not great at racking up points while he rides.
