Iowa to move off of Black Friday?

I, for one, like the game and hope it doesn't move. Unfortunately, it doesn't sound too good; and the fate may be sealed before we can even start winning some of the games.

From article:

"...“We haven’t seen the schedule yet, (we) haven’t done it yet,â€￾ said Rudner, who handles Big Ten scheduling. “It could be Iowa-Minnesota in the last week. Nebraska-Wisconsin. We just don’t know.â€￾...

The 2018 schedule could be completed and released within a month, Rudner said...."

I'm good with it. I was never a huge fan of it in the first place, and it was a total dud on the field. The concept was flawed from the start. Michigan and Ohio State are the only teams in the Big Ten you could realistically count on to be "worthy" of playing Nebraska on Black Friday (the jury's out on Penn State), and that's never going to happen.

Agree to disagree here, TM. But your comment about being a dud on the field, which is true, points to how Iowa has totally pizzed the opportunity down their leg by the type of teams they've fielded the past two seasons. It is Iowa's only guaranteed nationally televised game all season long, every season, unless they make the BIG championship game and a bowl game. Iowa needs to fix this, this season.

Its really depressing to see how Ferentz has just totally dropped the ball with this program the last 3 years.

He squandered one of if not the biggest concentration of talent the program has seen since the 50s , and then let the talent level drop right off the map to the point they couldn't beat central michigan at home two years later.

4 years ago at this time some talking heads were picking Iowa as national title contenders and now the conference is essentially righting Iowa off.

Soooooo Iowa and Nebraska should keep the Black Friday game?

I once thought like you, but have changed on this. Iowa can't buy this kind of exposure or advertising. It's the only game on for a good 2.5 hours that day, and if you're a normal guy you'd rather be watching it than dealing with the unwashed masses at your local shopping center.

The difference in opinion between the two fan bases is somewhat amusing. We (Iowa fans) couldn't really give two ***** about playing on Black Friday, while Nebraska fans will cite it as tradition...one that dates all the way back to the mid-90's. Their fans will tell you that they'd rather play Wisconsin on that day, never mind that in three meetings Wisconsin has scored 145 points. Also, never mind that Wisconsin reserves it's "hate" for Minnesota, and vice-versa.

I've read about a "Quadrangle of Hate" being played in November, where Minnesota, Iowa, Nebraska, and Wisconsin all play each other, culminating with Wisconsin playing Minnesota and Iowa playing Nebraska on Black Friday. Now that's an idea.

As far as 2018 goes, if it happens it's on Barta for not fighting hard enough to keep Iowa in that slot. As I said above, Iowa can't buy that kind of national exposure anywhere else.

Hope it stays!!

My only complaint has been that I get so excited for a great line up of college football watching for the day and the excitement for the other games gets completely taken away after the hawks get beat down by the huskers.

Got a mouse in your pocket? You don't speak for me, because I love the idea of playing on Black Friday as opposed to playing on Saturday with every other team.. An annual, nationally televised game against a border rival is a great thing IMO. But I guess we don't want that... I don't get it.

Guess it might help this game stay in the spotlight though if Iowa starts to field a real team again, though.

Shada must be one of those narrow minded hawk fans. One who hinges his season on "we're picked to suck, so we're gonna be good this year!" makes sense right?

Agreed Barta needs to get to trumpeting for this game. This is a big deal for the program. If we lose it, when will we get the chance for it again?

Do we really want to nationally advertise (with a corner on the market, so to speak) just how bad of shape we're in, though?

Being the only game in town can help or hurt you. When you're good, it can definitely help you. But when you're bad, it definitely hurts you.

You know, TM, I think we need to believe having the spotlight should be a tool to help us improve and succeed. We can't think of the negative; reality will be what it is and take care of things. But while we have the opportunity; we need to take it. Hell, if we have finished 4-8 last year but one of those wins was against Nebraska in front of the entire college football fandom, people and recruits would remember.

I like it as well, and I worded that wrong. What I mean by that is that I don't think the Iowa fan base (as a whole) is as dead-set on keeping the game on that day as the folks in Nebraska.

Yes, unless you're assuming that the program is going to stay in the dumps from this point forwards. College football is cyclical - who knows where Nebraska, Iowa, and Wisconsin will be in 5 years? Nebraska loses most of their offense after this year and comes to Kinnick in 2014 against an Iowa that will bring a lot of folks back. Pellllini will be on the hot seat if they don't win the division this year. Wisconsin has a new coach, and we all know that Ferentz has to show he's got another run left in him or he'll be shown the door.
