Iowa scores 111, 70 FGA and just 10 turnovers???

I don't care who you are playing...when you have 80 'possessions' and you have just 10 turnovers, that's pretty darn good.

Iowa averaged more than that many turnovers on 55 to 60 'possessions' during the Lickliter era.

That is pretty sweet. Did you get to see it or just listen to it. I was putting up Christmas lights otherwise I would have loved to listen. Instead I got to listen to my wife tell me what to do.

Who played the best??

I was at the exhibition today at Carver. I think three guys stood out the most...May, Cartwright, and Basabe, in that order. We had other guys who show some potential, including McCabe who doesn't really "look" like a freshman in the way he plays. But May, at least to me, was the best player on the floor today bar none. He's got some as of yet untapped athleticism that this style of play is going to allow him to unleash.

Good to hear. May is so athletic but would have never tapped into all that potential with the half court game. Getting up and down the floor will allow him to flourish.

You can read the live chat transcript from today that I hosted. Some opinions in there.

I was there as well and I agree with this except I would put Basabe ahead of Cartwright. May does have some freakish athletic ability that is going to get used in this system.

This team will need to work on rebounding in a big way and while they may not be good they will be fun to watch. I loved watching them getting the defensive rebound and pushing it down the court. What a change we are in for at Carver this winter.

You were putting up Christmas lights on November 7th?!

My entire neighborhood was. It was the best day you will get for the rest of the year so we took advantage. Better than getting on the roof when its freezing in a couple weeks. Don't worry they won't ever get turned on until after Thanksgiving.

Smart man. But geez doesn't it seem like we just took them down?

I think the whole team played a solid game. I also think that the fans that were there showed that they really appreciated this new style of ball. I hope to make it to IC for as many games as possible this year, but the DeMo to IC drive can be a beast in the winter. I do hope to see more fans and more students for the first game of the year next weekend.

Lets all keep in mind that Gattins(sp?) didn't even play last night.

May was a stud and you just didn't get to realize that he had this kind of talent in last years game plan.

Basabe (pronounced like wasabi but with a B) is a great get for the Hawks. It will be a lot of fun watching this kid grow. A lot of natural talent there and a nose for the ball.

Cartwright was kind of bagged on this forum when we picked him up. I see what coach saw. The kid has speed and is natural in the fast break. He had 2 really nice breaks and finished with a nice little finger role.

Coach was off the bench most of the game which I like to see. I also notice him coaching one of the player before they went into the locker room at half.

All in all I think it will be fun to watch this team develop this year. Sit back and enjoy hawk fans, because the Fran area is here. As the band chanted "we like fran"

I was one of the few who actually appreciated the philosophy that Lickliter brought to b-ball -- fundamentally sound team ball predicated on solid execution and positioning. It was how I learned and knew the game and had first-hand experience in its success as an equalizer against bigger, more athletic and talented players. I also compared it to my appreciation for the same approach KF takes to football. I m o it was the proper "system" at a place like Iowa.

Unfortunately, with the exception of Wisconsin, I was too stubborn to accept that just isn't how the game is played, now. It's too methodical and deliberate and takes way too much discipline to learn it. Especially when most players these days, from grade school on up, watch, learn and play the game with much more of a "controlled chaos" approach.

My conclusion on how Iowa was able have so many productive possessions while also taking care of the ball is the players avoiding the "paralysis x analysis" that is the inherent downside of playing methodical, disciplined b-ball. They just played and kept attacking / running.

Now, it's just an exhibition game against a way overmatched opponent. The Hawks are still going to get themselves into a lot of "sloppy" situations on offense which will lead to turnovers and some big defensive lapses against better opponents. If they can continue to be even 70 - 75% as productive, at least they will give themselves more margin for error than what they ever had under TL.

At the very least, it will be interesting and entertaining to watch them develop into what should be a more consistently competitive team.

I saw that as well, it was McCabe and Cully and then I think Basabe joined them because they didn't get a very good shot off to end the half and there was some confusion between Cully and Zach that Fran wanted to correct before they left floor. He stood the whole game minus the last couple of minutes when Iowa was up by 40.

I agree with you the drive from DSM to IC can suck in the winter and a reason I can't really make weeknight games, but I got my tickets for Sunday already and I'm heading back. I think I might pull the trigger and order one of the weekend packs they have. Like I said this team is going to be fun to watch even if they don't win a lot of games but I think they could surprise a few teams.

I know the Polk County I-Club is looking to organize some bus trips to Iowa City for the games this year. Might want to check with them as I thought it was going to be affordable. I'm thinking in the $30 for roundtrip transportation range. When you factor in gas for a 280 mile trip from the west side of Des Moines it's pretty close to what you may spend on gas.
