I just looked at UW’s current oline. Three of the guys were listed under 300 coming out of high school, so not much different than a typical Iowa offensive line recruit. If we strived to get bigger on the offensive line I think we could do it.
I agree with your points though. For some reason I actually felt we had a chance to turn the corner on offense, but nobody can call plays if you can’t run the ball. So is it our interior offensive line that is the main issue, or the scheme? I’m not sure, likely a little of both.
The alarming thing about this thread is it spans over many years. We’ve had 3 different OCs. We’ve had good offensive lines and good backs, but the running game has been consistently average to below average. Scheme wise the zone blocking and general running concepts have been in place that entire time though. Meanwhile as we have mentioned Wisconsin who is very similar to us in many ways has punished teams on the ground with dominate rushing attacks for the last ten years. One would think it’s time for a change but we all know it’s unlikely that will happen.
Ah, but in the Iowa rushing scheme, it isn't necessarily about "accumulating yards". It's about sustaing long drives and trying to keep the defense off the field. In KFs world--right or wrong--a 10-minute 50 yard drive > a 3-play 80-yard drive, all other things being equal.
