Iowa Receiver options breakdown

KMM is a good receiver he had good Reception numbers last year but the yards were low since every pass he caught was about 4 yards. Also the original poster said he was a junior. He is actually a senior.

No, he is a Junior.

Nick -

Nice job on your breakdown of the receiving corps. While I'm not at your level of optimism for this group I like your thoughts.

Ok I had some time to break down the receivers further today. Iowa has 17 receivers on the roster. At least 6 of the 17 are likely to redshirt. The group includes 2 seniors, 3 juniors, 2 sophomores, 1 red shirt freshman, and 9 true freshmen. *The average height is 6’1â€￾ the average weight is 189. Lots of the younger guys were brought in to fit Greg Davis’s system and I expect we will see a lot of players in and out for different formations that we were unable to do last year. *So it won’t be 2 guys with huge numbers but many guys with smaller numbers that combine to make a pretty good passing game. Here is how I see some of the players will shape out.
>
> Kevonte*Martin Manley: He is Iowa's most proven receiver. This will be the first time in a system for 2 consecutive years. I expect improvement to 70 receptions for 750 yards.
>
> Jordan Cotton: He averaged 14.3 yards per reception last year he will be Iowa's deep threat. I predict about 20 receptions for 300 yards for him this year.
>
> Tevaun*Smith: Listed as a starter so the coaches expect improvement from him. If he can work on some mechanics he could be a very good player. He has the size and speed for the position. I predict 25 catches for 300 yards for him this year.
>
> Riley McCarron:* I see him working his way up the depth chart with his sticky hands. He has shown that he will catch anything thrown his way. He also has pretty good speed. He will be the most pleasant surprises with 20 catches for 275 yards.
>
> Damond*Powell: *The best*Juco wide receiver last year. If he can make the jump to this level he can be great. It may take till next year though for him to get there fully so 17 receptions for 200 yards this year.
>
> Blake Haluska: He has come on strong this spring. He will get time as more of a possession receiver, he has the size and straight to catch passes in traffic. I predict about 15 catches for 125 for him this year.
>
> Derrick Willies: He is a fast and tall local kid. He has also put in a lot of work this spring. I think he will play this year and make some good plays at that 10 catches for 150 yards.
>
> The 7 above should get the majority of the catches combining for about 177 catches and 2075 yards. The following players will also be in the mix combing for 17 catches and 170 yards.
>
> Jacob Hillyer
>
> Don Shumpert
>
> Andre Harris
>
> Derrick Mitchell
>
> That makes 2245 yards total for the wide receiver group. *Add a combined 1000 yards from the tight ends and backs. To bring the total to 3245 yards.

Same problem as last year, lack of separation. That's not a speed criticsm, im sure pleny of these guys can fly in a 40 yard dash. Nobody on the roster has shown the quickness and strength to get open on a consistent basis during games.

They better have great hands because more often than not they are blasted as soon as the ball touches their fingertips.

I think this could be true. Dont think it will help the ones that cant catch. But haveing all the coaches on the same page should in other ways. It was a lot worse than was let out last year
I don't fully agree. I think any or all of those guys could show significant improvement being instructed by a WR coach who is experienced teaching the types of routes that Davis uses in his system. I think the disconnect between Campbell and Davis had A LOT to do with how poorly Iowa's passing game performed last year, and that disconnect should be eliminated by Kennedy's experience teaching WRs Davis' system.

(That being said, I'm much more optimistic than most.)

Wow. I thought for sure he was a senior. That's great. He has a chance to be the all time leader in receptions by the time he is done.
Yeah he has a good shot. The record is 170 he has 82 so far. So 89 to go over two seasons can be done baring major injuries.

I read the thread title as a verb rather than a noun. As in, our receiving options; they have broken down. Good write-up though.

Anyone think there is a possibility Davis takes advantage of the TE depth and slide one outside for some formations? That's one thing I would love to see to create mismatches. Sorry if this has been discussed prior to this thread.
