Iowa plays the Tampa 2?

I was reading an article on Bleacher Report that mentioned Iowa runs a Tampa 2 defense. I feel like we run more of a cover 2/cover 4.

Maybe I don't get what the Tampa 2 is. Can somebody explain the difference?

The problem is that you were reading an article on Bleacher Report.

BR sent out employment ads last year. They honestly don't require any sort of education or journalism background to be able to write for them. Insane.

Tampa 2 and Cover 2 have pretty much become synonyms, so there is no real problem inter-changing either term. If you want to get really technical about it, in a Tampa 2, the linebackers fall back further, thus creating a softer zone near the line of scrimmage, and thus a smaller, faster d-line and linebackers are needed.

Yes, the tampa 2 requires the MLB to cover more deep middle than a normal cover 2. Which allows the SS/FS more freedom to cover the sidelines. But as far as I know, Iowa does not run the tampa 2. More of base cover 2 out of the 4-3 defense with the corners playing 5-8 yards off the line of scrimmage.

I give their owners/founders credit in the SEO department...few do it better than BR...but what they do is flood the web with content items, so many writing on same things, that they are at the top of search engine searches...

But what you find? high school journalism stuff in many instances.

One of my main problems with Google's Algo.

Hawks definitely have some "MLB covering deep middle" characteristics in their Cover 2, but the Tampa 2 also relies on press coverage by the corners, which Iowa rarely does.

I loved the part where the dude speculated that Hamilton would grow into an OG ... that was just precious. If ever there was a dude who was a "true TE" ... it would be Hamilton. I do agree with him that it might be possible for Hamilton to earn early reps at TE in 2011.

Iowa would rather have push the "softness" of the zone closer to the LOS. That makes sense considering how well Iowa players typically tackle ... and given that we'll force opposing Os to dink-n-dunk all day long.

The corners play the squat technique, meaning when the ball is snapped they squat at their 8 yard depth and watch everything develop infront of them. If no one is threatening their zone, the corners will drift with the #1 receiver. This creates a bracket coverage of the #1 receiver where the corner is under and the safety is over.

The Tampa 2 (when run well) is my favorite defensive scheme to watch. Freakishly good athletes playing well-disciplined football. The biggest drawback of the Tampa 2 is the personnel required to run it.

You HAVE to have a world-class middle linebacker: speed, coverage skills and run support. They have to be able to do it all and do it very well. Unless you can find that rare gem pick another defense because your Tampa 2 is going to be shakey at best.

If you're lucky enough to find that critical piece you'll need corners that are good to great one-on-one. The safeties have to have speed on top of speed and like to hit. And you need a consistently good to great pass rush.

A daunting task to assemble that cast. But if you can do...a joy to watch. Not much fun to play against, but fun to watch. :)

I'm hungry for anything at this point. I'll just skim/skip anything that doesn't meet a minimum threshold.
