Iowa player that just couldn’t get there

Payton has had a decent season this year, but most would agree that he has never quite gotten to where we thought he would. What other former Hawkeyes would join him? First one I thought (mostly for the older guys) would be Michael Payne. First team freshman All-American and regressed after that. Greg Stokes became the stud from there. Who else am I missing?

Al Lorenzen comes to mind. Melsahn Basabe perhaps. But to me it was Kenyon Murray and Kevin Boyle, who's career paths were so eerily similar they were practically joined at the hip. I did a stat comparison of the pair years ago and it was apples to apples. Some who have thrown at me that Boyle couldn't compare to Kenyon athletically forgot how athletic Kevin was.

Both had promising freshman seasons but never built on them and in fact gradually regressed from them. Boyle was never the same after failing to score in the 1980 national semifinal vs Louisville.

No pun intended, but in his defense, the last two years, Payton has been forced to play out of position. The last two years he has been at the 4, and on top of that they are asking him to be Batman when he is clearly a Robin.

But also, most Robins under Fran became Batman the following year. Sandfort has every ability to be a batman. He just hasn't.

Micheal Payne was also the first one who came to my mind. As Greg Stokes got better, Payne regressed into mediocrity. Makes you wonder what Payne's career would have been like if Stokes was never around.

I would also put Roy Marble, Sr on the list. Yes he had a great Iowa career, but you always felt he was destined for much more. Then he kinda fizzled out in the pros. BJ Armstrong, Kevin Gamble, Brad Lohhaus all were Iowa teammates that ended up with better NBA careers than Marble.

Yeah, despite playing out of position you would expect him to shoot better than 34% from 3 this season.

Comps were to Luke Recker. He battled injuries and flashed here and there, but never quite got there until the last 3 months of his Iowa career.

Kevin was playing with an injured wrist his Sr. year but yes, he really dropped off. Especially that year. Always a good defender but couldn't hit a jump shot to save his life.

As I recall, didn’t Boyle have this “moderately” talented point guard on the team his first couple years?
