Iowa overwhelms Ashland in decisive exhibition victory; Partial Game Video

I listened to this on the radio. One thing that bothers me is that Rob Brooks and Tiffany Reed don’t update listeners with the score often enough. It was almost an entire segment where score wasn’t mentioned until the next commercial break. This wasn’t the first time I had noticed it. Obviously I could just look it up online during the game. Rant over. The women really pounced on them quickly. Sorry for the title, the video isn’t really highlights. From article:

Jan Jensen's second-year squad jumped out of the gates and overwhelmed Ashland throughout the 104-63 win on Thursday night.

Fun to see em back on the court.

I'm thinking this team will be an inside out half court team. They are going to force feed Ava and Stuelke like crazy and just pick whichever matchup is better or if one of em has the hotter hand to go to the most. Especially during the time that the starting 5 is out there. Kylie and McCabe are just limited players. McCabe can't do anything off the dribble she's a catch and shoot player pretty much with not much of a handle. She doesn't create for other. Kylie I get nervous whenever she handles the ball. She can defend pretty well but she's going to have to do more to justify playing mins over Deal, Rodriguez, Stremlow etc.

Positives I saw were Stuelke and Ava look like who they should be. We dominated the glass as they should've against that D2 opponent. Shot well inside and that should be the strength of the team.

Amongst the newbies Chit-Chat looked solid. Unafraid in control, yet fast and aggressive. Emely Rodriguez is the name we all better start learning the name of. She wasn't the most heralded name of the transfers/recruits but she went out there and just played like gangbusters. 7-10 shooting 17 pts 3-3 from 3 pt land. All were in the flow of the game. She's the perfect player to have coming off the bench. But I suspect it won't be for long. It'll be tough keeping her off the floor and Kylie better have her head on a swivel cause she's coming for her minutes.

Negatives I saw were it was sloppy lots of TOs and too many missed FTs. And yes this was a game that didn't count I'm not making more of it then it is. I bring it up cause these were also issues for the duration of last season too. Here's to hoping it won't be this yr

I didn't forget Addie Deal. She looked ok. Couple sloppy TOs where she dribbled in too deep a couple times with nowhere to go. I don't think she's going to out athletic defenders at this level. I don't think she's quicker faster then most. But she's a talented skilled smart player. She had 5 assists and is clearly unselfish looking to distribute. She scored her first bucket with her left inside the paint rebounding her own miss. She can shoot outside like she showed on her deep 3 at the end of the game. I think she'll be a fantastic player eventually. It'll just take a bit and she may be more of a role player this yr then I'd originally thought. till things click a little more for her. Her best ball is in front of her.

Speaking of Rodriquez, her numbers last year at Georgia Tech were nothing to crow about but when she was recruited and was asked to describe her game, she just said, 'I'm a winner, that's the thing'. I remember thinking that was quite a statement, can she back it up?

She's clearly willing to put in the work. I'm guessing she was just being honest. Looking forward to seeing what she can do.

Chit Chat played at GT and Rodriguez played at UCF.

McCabe and Feuerbach started, and they are both valuable members of the team, I am glad we have them. But they are not long for the starting lineup. Rodriguez will be the 3, and I think Deal will start in the backcourt alongside Chit-Chat.

McCabe's one elite skill is critical for this team, so she will get minutes, and she will make a difference. Likewise, Feuerbach is a veteran presence who has been in big moments and can be a handful on D (e.g. see her work against JuJu last season). But the talent on this team, players 1-10, is like nothing we have ever seen before.

While distributing the minutes is going to be a major challenge, the versatility is off the charts.

We could realistically go out there with Hays, Heiden, Stuelke, Rodriguez, Deal, and try to pound opponents with size (this is far-fetched, but not insane). Even keeping Rodriguez at the 3 and going Deal/Feuerbach in the backcourt is a very long lineup.

We could also go Chit-Chat/McCabe/Deal/Rodriguez/5...4 shooters around a single, athletic post. Capable of defending quick lineups, running, and gunning.

I think Rodriguez can realistically play 2, 3, and 4. Deal can probably play 1, 2, and 3. Stuelke can obviously play 4 or 5; 3 would be a big ask, but you are what you can guard, and I would trust her guarding most 3s. Iowa experimented a little with Stuelke at the 3 last year with end-of-game defensive substitutions.

I think Heiden has shown enough athleticism to believe she could play a 4, like Bethany Doolittle back when she was paired with Megan Johnson. Jensen has mentioned that a future Hays/Heiden frontcourt is a possibility.

Stremlow can swing up and down the lineup.

Yeah Kylie is just going to have to contribute more to justify her PT. If Rodriguez plays anything close to what she just did consistently then 14 mins won't be nearly enough for her.

McCabe is a one trick pony. She can't dribble and create well for others. She doesn't rebound or defend all that well. She just spreads the floor by being able to shoot and this team is short on shooters so her role is very needed. I'm just not sure how many mins that'll translate into when Addie Deal is right there. She can also shoot outside along with hopefully lots of other ways to contribute.

The other gals Stremlow and Mallegni are kinda wildcards. It'd be nice if Stemlow could be Chit-Chats backup. Mallegni is more of a 3-4 I suppose just depending on how they want to play. I thought Houston looked really good for her first time out there. Jan has her hands full sorting out PT for everyone and how she's going to mix and match lineups. We can create some problems for other teams. We can go big or small. It's going to be fun
