Iowa Not Winning the Close Ones: A Closer Look

I think this is the thing that angers most of the fans. We watch the conservative play calling, and coaching blunders and say to ourselves "here we go again". Not that any of us know football as well as KF, but we see the style, and the inability to make the right call at crucial moments come back to bite us over and over again and we are tired of it.

The coaching staff cannot seem to make the necessary adjustments at the crucial times that DJL mentioned, and therefore we give up a long pass or run, or our "D" line is so gassed that scrambling "Q"'s get downfield and pick up a big 1st down.....and it appears sometimes that we aren't playing to "win", we need to keep putting down the gas peddle and not let up...

Well put. It's so old watching us dominate a game only to be up about 10 points halfway through the 4th. That's when we go ultra conservative and give up a late score and go 3 and out on offense. It usually comes down to whether they turn the ball over on their last drive or not.

Don't forget all of the successful fake punts, on-side kicks, and 20+ yards scrambles on third and long in the waning moments of fourth quarters.

These stats are are gerrymandered. It makes no sense to select 4 points as what determines a close game. A close game should be any game 8 points or less (TD plus 2 point conversion). Those are games where one play makes the difference. In those games Iowa has a winning record since 2001.

is it because of bad coaching, bad luck or the two combined?

Bad luck? I think you could say that Kirk has actually benefitted from incredibly good luck at times. Specifically the 2009 season, where he barely managed to beat UNI and Arkansas St. A couple of other really close wins that year as well and what do you know, Kirk gets the gigantic contract that is currently a giant albatross around the neck of the Iowa football program. Had luck went the other way that year he could have finished at 6-6 or 7-5 and probably wouldn't be the coach at Iowa right now.

I think Kirk's coaching routinely costs Iowa at least one win every single year.

Should only count the games that Iowa won. Kirk hasn't lost one of those.

Put it this way, given the data in the article, there is less than a 5% chance that Iowa has only won 20 of 50 close games just by random chance. Given the sample size, there is strong confidence that it's not just bad luck.

There is something causal happening in the last 16 years with regard to our poor close-game record. And there's nothing to show that we're trending the right direction either.

Ahem...

This is the summary of the Ferentz era

"When Iowa has a positive turnover margin: 67-19"

That sounds like lawyer speak to me; trying to defend something that's indefensible
