Iowa, Nebraska Kicked Off Nonsense

It's all such nonsense. Shake hands or not. I see it like cussing. They're just words. I don't mind if my kids cuss. But, I make sure they understand that other people will judge them outside of our home. Potential dates. Future inlaws. Employers. Nobody gets judged harshly for not cussing our shaking hands. It's up to them to decide if it's worth the risk.

Same with some paint on turf at midfield. And this applies to both host and visitor.

I would prefer that "my" team err on the side of sportsmanship, lest they be judged by others.

I am glad we have KF and the kind of players we recruit. Well, QB’s maybe.

I think it is a tough tightrope to walk. Creating a culture and whatnot. And I think over the course of 20 years, Kirk has walked it well, for the most part.

I think he had some assistants and such who took it too far. Maybe even crossing "the line" at times. Albeit, as they say, it's a very thin line and they keep moving it. And he had at least faced (if not accepted) accountability for some of it, as the captain of the ship.

Not saying he's perfect, by any stretch. As warranted by the thing we don't address in this particular subforum. It was addressed and resolved. A few drunk drivers. Some academic issues. The gambling nonsense. And a minornl recruiting violation in these early days of the wild west of "new football".

Was certainly struck by Higgins saying "Can you imagine KF doing that?"

I would venture to say that all of us have clamored for him to be a bit more..."confronting". You know, run up the score or something. About the "meanest" thing he ever did in this vein is to spend those timeouts against Minnesota a few years back for another chance at a few extra points for a little extra breathing room. I guess he did hang 50 on OSU for the first time in ever.

Re: the “prayer” thing, it’s a disingenuous farce 100% meant to antagonize the home team. I had no problem with them not being allowed out there.

I’m not a man of the cloth so to speak so I have no spiritual dog in the fight, but to anyone who is, I’ll ask you to justify it after reading the following from your book…

Matthew 6:5-6.

I think the disrespect, flag planting, and trash talk is great! Makes rivalries great to watch. Sportsmanship is boring.

I waffle on this. Flag planting? Lame that anyone would put any meaning to it. In other threads elsewhere, people are debating what to do about it. As in "someone should step in and ban it". I don't see it working. Why not just embrace it? Winner gets to do it. Just make it a "thing" and it will quickly be ignored as meaningless.

I'm pretty good with trash talk and asshattery. Like I said. It's a bit like cursing. You'll never stop a large portion of the population from judging it poorly.

I don't disagree with you, however if it's decided that "winner gets to do it" then as we saw this weekend it's going to continue. I think at the minimum the conferences have to take into consideration whether it's worth it to allow it to continue going forward. If they decide the possible repercussions outweigh continuing to let it go on, then they have to put a policy in place and outline the consequences. I don't think fining the programs does a bit of good in the long run and think it has to be along the lines of fining the players involved (since they're getting paid now) and/or suspensions.

I'm all for trash talk and asshattery, but when something like that happens after the game there's too many people out on the field aside from the athletes that could get hurt. Grown ass men in pads and helmets swinging at eachother doesn't bother me, but what happens when it's a 110 pound manager/reporter getting hurt because they can't get out of the way. The people complain that pepper spray was used at OSU and that those involved should sue are the same people that would be saying the same thing if LEO didn't use pepper spray to end it and someone got seriously hurt. These players are too big and strong to simply step in and break up. Not only is it a bad look for all parties involved, but it's a major safety concern for everyone present. Based on this weekend I think we're going to see a change.

Pretty sure we'll see the NCAA instate a rule about flag planting after this weekend so hopefully the whole issue just goes away.

Flag planting has to destroy turf, I mean, that in itself should make it a thing that never happens. I kind of like the hate, not going to lie. Would I handle shit like that? Probably not, but I don't mind a little smack and disrespect.

Kinnick may be a religious experience for some to visit but it isn't a church. And midfield isn't a pulpit. Can pray anywhere you want quietly to yourself with the same result. Try the pink locker room for best results. To insist it 'needs' to be done at midfield is illogical and as you said it's an intentional antagonistic move. Otherwise why do it? There's zero explanation for it.

Same for me... less then 2 minutes after a flag planting people are clearing the field pretty much and heading to locker rooms. So whys it matter? Fans are streaming out. Game is done and over it means as much as a touchdown celebration to me.

If you're going by the book they purport to follow, not only can you pray somewhere out of sight, you're supposed to.

The best troll ever...period...is playing Jump Around after beating Wisconsin in Kinnick.

Never seen so many drunk badgers flipping the bird at empty space in my life.

As far as the whole no shaking of hands thing goes. Do we know if Nebraskas captains took it upon themselves to do that or if they were instructed by Rhule? I'd never heard that angle on it being brought up yet besides the WUW pod I listened to. They didn't know but speculated that no way Rhule himself woulda done that.

I don't know what day they typically do their mid-week pressers but I kinda want to take of work to watch.

One of Nebraskas players was looking straight down and wouldn't look at the Iowa captain across from him. That kinda told me that at least he individually was going along with the crowd and he wasn't really good with it. That's a thing you do when you're ashamed of what you're doing.

I wouldn't put it past Rhule only because of his other antics. I'd hope he didn't. But it's a totally fair question to bring up. Is he gonna put that on himself or throw his captains under the bus....
