If all it takes is being 6' tall and 230lbs there are a lot of running backs who fit that bill that never see the field. Would Coker have been as good as Robinson would have been in the same situation? It takes more than size and speed to make a running back. Robinson gets little respect. Indiana's rush defense stinks, they give up over 160 yards per game! I saw Coker try to make several lateral moves today only to get tackled on the spot where Robinson gains another 3 to 4 yards. He needs to improve a great deal if he is going to be successful in the Big Ten. When you get inside the 10 yard line it becomes harder and harder to run or throw the ball. Robinson is a bull, has great eyesight and lateral movement to make the key extra yards. He was sorely missed today.

Nobody is saying that Coker is better. But we didn't really even give him a chance to punch it in, so how could anyone know that Robinson would have been much better? Really, how do you not even give a guy like Coker a chance?

We saw the same thing with KOK in 2008. First and goal to end the game vs NW at Kinnick and he was afraid to give the ball to Jewel Hampton. KOK was wrong then and he was wrong today, he needs to man up and quit being such a p*ssy with young (but very capable) running backs.
Terrible play calling inside the 12 yard line. 7 of 9 plays from inside the indy 12 were passes in the first half...after Coker had run for over 100 yards. Should have absolutely run it 4 straight times after Coker busted off the 15 yard run to make it first and goal at the 6. Just absurd play calling....unfortunately not the first or last time we'll see something like that.

I think missing Gettis and Nolan Mac were a bigger issue than not having A-Rob. I also think it's difficult to say A-Rob was missed b/c Coker got very few carries to really indicate what a RB could've done in the RZ. The other issue is that at times the OL didn't play particularly well today, namely the interior 3 had troubles, and Ferentz got his butt kicked multiple times, specifically on a RZ carry. If you're saying b/c A-Rob wasn't suited up KOK didn't try to run the ball, that's a different argument. But when you basically don't give your RB's any RZ carries, it's hard to say a specific RB was actually missed.

If you don't trust the RB in the red zone, why trust him running the ball deep in your own territory? Better to fumble at their 20 than your own.

Have you watched the OL the last few wks? They were playing as well as they'd played all season, in particular in pass pro. Part of the reason they were playing so well is b/c the same players had been playing consistently for many wks. It's called continuity. It matters as much, if not more, w/ OL as it does w/ QB's and WR's. Maybe you noticed how much time Stanzi has had to throw the last few wks compared to today, including the # of sacks. Maybe you noticed some of the blocking in the red zone also. It doesn't matter if it's A-Rob, Coker, Morse, or Rogers getting carries. If holes aren't there, RB's aren't successful, and today the holes weren't there.
And so it's clear, the # of people that (dis)agree w/ my opinions on a college football message board doesn't exactly keep me up at night.

It was simply idiotic not to give Coker the ball inside the 10 yardline time after time after time. Those dumb decisions should have cost Iowa the game. Horrible playcalling all day. Perhaps the worst in several year. If you don't trust him, don't play him. Coker ran a great game. He deserves a little respect, especially from his coaching staff.
I agree with him. Ferentz and Koeple together is a pretty light combo.

Ya, it's too bad we couldn't have a 100 yard rusher with 6 yards a carry today with those two playing on the line.

Some of the coaching decisions and play calling have really been questionable all year. I don't think it is anything new with this staff. I, along with many others, was questioning (and posting) weeks ago why Coker wasn't getting any reps. We had 2-3 touchdowns leads against Penn St and Michigan for crying out loud. And I don't want to hear about not being "Big Ten ready". You have to show some trust in your backups. KF was constantly saying he wanted to get Coker some reps but it just didn't happen. I had a bad feeling Robinson was going to get injured carrying 25-30 times per game. And then of course ARob is concussed when he ABSOLUTELY should NOT have been in the game against Mich St. Why was he? Because KF said he wanted his players to "finish". Of all his players, ARob is probably his hardest worker and most determined. ARob had nothing to prove against Mich St at that point. Or any point. He is a "finisher". I know it is not a popular thing to criticize KF but this was just a STUPID decision. Did Lester Erb and KOK have any input in that decision?
Fast forward to today and the redzone play-calling. I also don't understand why Coker's number wasn't called. Just don't get it.

I was at the game today. It was clear that Stanzi got out of quite a few plays today... I think kudos have to be given to Indiana's #5, their safety (converted QB, his name escapes me) who was making calls, and basically getting in Stanzi's head (or so it appeared) all day. He was also primarily responsible for doubling our tight ends all day. They could not shake loose of him, and made life really miserable in the red zone today.
That being said, if I never see that corner fade into the end zone again, I will be mighty happy. I just got home, and haven't watched the TV coverage, but it was insane in the red zone. I was sitting mid field right behind the IU bench, and IU fans were giddy that Iowa NEVER ran the ball inside the 10 yard line. OK, I understand "tendencies" and the like... but if you have a back who is churning up real estate, with very little resistance, and I don't care that he is a freshman, you need to TRY to roll up you sleeves once (and they had 5 chances) and see if you can punch it in. I mean, IU faithful were laughing by the second half with every successive red zone play... there is no excuse for that, none.
Last criticism... what the heck was that sequence at the end of the first half? For a team that was so deadly in the two minute and red zone offense last year... it is bizarre to watch them in these modes this year. Have the coaching staff gotten so far inside Stanzi's head, to be patient and not make mistakes, that he is paralyzed to make ANY decisions? It certainly seems that way to me.

I totally agree Jon. How many times has A-Rob made the first potential tackler miss this year? Many times. A-Rob has that "Chuck Foreman Spin Move," and he knows how to get into the endzone. He also runs equally well with or without a lead blocker.
I thought Coker ran better with Morse in there to lead him through holes, and I think if Iowa had run more lead plays behind Morse, they would have been better off, today. Coker is going to be very good, but he is less shifty than A-Rob, so I think Coker benefits more from having a lead blocker in there.

Would agree ran the ball fine between the 20's but when we got into the Red Zone could not run the ball at all. A-Rob is a tough runner inside the 10 and does not put the ball on the ground.
Yes me missed A-Rob, but Coker and Rogers both showed enough for me to think they easily could have carried the mail into the endzone if given the chance inside the 12. I recall 12 plays from inside the 12 yard line ,with 9 of them being pass plays, and I think with all 3 drives inside the 12 being the result of gashing runs through IU's defense. It's hard for me to believe they were thinking, "well, we can run it in easily, but A-Rob's hurt so let's throw. Forget that we trusted Coker to carry the ball deep in our own territory and that he was running over IU's defense." If they were thinking that, then they outthought themselves out of a couple of touchdowns.
If we would have had a redzone drive where we ran 3 straight times and got stuffed I could conclude we missed A-Rob, but we didn't even have back to back runs, or more than 1 run on any of the 3 drives inside the 12. We absolutely misssed ARob in the red zone today. He runs much tougher than Coker and I would venture to say even though he may not be the most talented running back he is definitely one of the toughest and most determined running backs I have ever seen. And Jon is absolutely right about how Coker runs the ball. He's a tough runner also but he is running standin straight up if he learns to get a forward lean and lower his shoulder pads he might become close to unstoppable with his size and toughness but as of right now he's liable to get himself killed running like he is and that doesn't cut it in the red zone.
