Iowa missed an opportunity Saturday

I'm gonna get lambasted for saying this, but I was stunned - STUNNED that Iowa did not publicly give the game ball to the Street family.

Would it have been contrived and a bit too Hollywood? Maybe, but as a fan and alum that is what I wanted to see, and talking to people in town on Saturday night, I think most people wanted to see that.

A formal recognition by the players that this game was for you.

And in doing so, I realize that the players might have to be told that if we win this game, this is what you are going to do, and that might make it insincere. But so what. The game on Saturday was about Chris Street as much as it was about Iowa vs. Wisconsin.

I also realize that Fran probably doesn't want to be bothered with these sorts of requests from the AD.

Perfect opportunity from someone from sports marketing to go grab the ball, give it to Fran and ask if he would like to present it to the Street family.

I am constantly stunned by Iowa's AD inability to be big in big moments. Saturday was as big as it got for Iowa BBall since 2005-06.

The family still got the game ball. I don't think you need to make a big public showing of giving the ball to them. Sometimes private ceremonies mean more to the family, which is more important than trying to make the school look good in this instance.

Sure - I'll buy that.

But I guess my thought was that everything about the theme of the day was about how Street was bigger than one player, that he represented everything good about the state of Iowa. Given that, I wanted to see it.

Just my $.02 but given everything that was said about Chris Street, that's the moment I wanted to see.

Street family doesn't seem like the type that wants a whole of publicity, and I'd be willing to bet that they had some input as to how things were handled Saturday. If they didn't want a public ceremony (and I don't know that they didn't, I'm just guessing), who are any of us to say we know better?

tough to argue with that.

I personally don't like staged moments for the camera. We are not Iowa State. I think it was pretty emotional for the Street's and I don't blame the university at all for having that go on behind the scenes instead of in front of the whole world.

Damn people are looking for reasons to complain today. I'm ****** Iowa didn't let Mike Street play in the game. The AD really ****ed that one up, I'm sure he would have loved to get out there and mix it up like Chris used to.

Seriously, it was a great ceremony and awesome night. We don't to whine about stupid **** like when they got the game ball or not wearing Street's name on the jerseys.

Missed opportunity? I dont see that at all. The ceremony at halftime was excellent, the videos playing before the game were great, the team wearing the Street shirts for shoot around was cool and the jersey on the bench was a very nice touch. Where did they miss any opportunity? I thought it was handled perfectly.

I'm definitely glad they did it the way they did. Don't cheapen the moment after the Michigan game by staging a repeat. That moment was completely spontaneous and perfect, a true to life Hollywood moment. Marching the family back out on the court would have just been awkward, and they didn't have their then-customary courtside seats on Saturday.

I thought this thread was going to be about getting some serious national exposure for putting a 25 point beat down on Wisconsin. We definitely missed that opportunity.
