Iowa, land of the tight ends

Was sort of surprising to see the staff add three TEs in yesterday's recruiting class. If all three arrive on campus and everyone returns from last year, that will make nine TEs on the roster this fall, unless there are redshirts (very possible) or people switch positions.

Presumably Herman and CJ have the inside track. But who else likely gets playing time this year? Do any of this year's signees see the field?

Jake Duzey 6-4/224 FR Troy, Mich. (Athens)
Ray Hamilton 6-5/235 FR Strongsville, Ohio (Strongsville)
Henry Krieger-Coble 6-4/210 FR Mount Pleasant, Iowa (Mount Pleasant)
Dakota Getz 6-4/230 FR(RS) Macon, IL (Meridian)
Austin Vier 6-7/228 SO Huxley, IA (Ballard)
C.J. Fiedorowicz 6-7/250 SO Johnsburg, IL (Johnsburg)
Zach Derby 6-3/235 JR Iowa City, IA (Iowa City HS)
Jonathan Gimm 6-3/240 JR Houston, TX (Westfield)
Brad Herman 6-5/247 SR Metamora, IL (Metamora HS)

I was surprised to see this as well, although it sounds like they signed 3 do to really liking the skills all 3 bring to the table. It seems like most high school tight ends need time to develop their blocking skills, so likely at least 2 of the incoming players will redshirt.

I also believe they could end up moving one of the older tight ends to fullback due to a lack of depth there. I think Gimm might have played some fullback at some point, and possibly someone like Derby could end up there as well.

I saw Coble play this year, I wouldn't be surprised to see him moved to LB at all, just my opinion. A year of conditioning under his belt and I really think he could excel there.

Tweeter,

Morehouse did a nice piece on this. They only intended to take two, then Duzey caught their eye. I LOVE the way our staff approached this situation w/ Hamilton and Krieger-Coble. And I love even more the way those two were on board.

Here is the piece:

I see Duzey playing a split type of TE, and maybe one moves to LB I don't know. I was wondering about Vier getting bigger and going DE or something. I think Gimm has moved to FB and I think CJF and Herman get most of the reps. I think all 3 of the incoming TE red shirt this year anyway, and then next year there will be some room as some guys graduate in the next year or two.

I'm pretty sure Gimm did move to fullback, at least that's what I saw last year. I think you're right about Vier moving to DE or possibly OT, I think he and Riley McMinn might be clones. Austin Vier - Yahoo! Sports Riley McMinn - Yahoo! Sports
From 11/02/10 - "We're getting a little thin at the linebacker spot,'' Ferentz said Tuesday at his weekly news conference. "You probably noticed that. And we're getting younger. We're getting younger as we get thinner.'' "It's Ross and ... well, it was going to be Dakota Getz before he got hurt.''
Hawkeyes have plenty of linebackers

We get a lot of TE's in part because they are such versitile atheletes. They have frames that can be moulded to other positions, like DL and OL, and typically have good feet and hands. It's a great approach.

It was "small school" but I loved the film on Getz when he was signed. Hope his injury wasn't too serious.

It's likely the 3 of them redshirt. Derby will likely be the #3 tight end. He saw a good amount of reps last year. The other posters are right about Gimm he was working as a FB. Getz also moved to LB. The other question is Vier, I really don't know what the staff has planned with him.

I liked his highlight reel too, mostly him looking like Tebow playing QB but a nice play or two on defense. I was mostly trying to point out that I think Getz is at LB already.

Interesting to read that when the staff came across Duzey and wanted to offer him, before they did they let the other two TEs know since they had told them they were the only two they were going to take. I know that's the way it's supposed to work but I'm not sure it always does.

Classy on the part of the Iowa staff. And great attitude on the part of Hamilton and Krieger-Coble to come ahead and compete.

I think it's a good idea to draft these big tight ends...put some meat on them and move them to another position (T, DE, OLB).

They would be smart to use Duzey like a Jay Novachek h-back type...but not sure O'Keefe is that creative.
