Iowa Kansas

Interesting watching the Iowa WBB game tonight on B1G Networking (at first I though this was an ESPN game) for a while there I was thinking - wow! they must think the world of Iowa. back to earth. They showed a documentary about the team before the game.

Can you imagine last year's team with a defense that could hold Kansas to just 4 points off like 5 or 6 attempts in a quarter?

Kinda like imagining last year's football team with an offense.

Think the Hawk Women are going to be very good this season

Hannah has improved and O'Grady is a force inside on offensive and is tough
inside, she seems to love contact and enjoys putting the opponent on the floor
and stands over them grinning while they are writhing on the floor

Lucy is the Goods, and they can't leave her alone of a second, deadly from the arc and
can take it inside anytime she wants, while being a threat getting the ball to her teammates
,
Syd and Kylie are seasoned and reliable, McCabe is a sharpshooter

And the newcomers are tough and fit in the system perfectly

The D is strong and will be a factor all season

They are constantly in attack mode and are constantly in motion

Gonna be a fun season to watch

I was trying to think when was the last time I watched an Iowa bball team -- men or women -- play consistently strong defense for multiple games. Been a long time! Coach Jensen clearly values defense more than Bluder, and it shows: better scouting reports are leading to taking away individual opponent tendencies, better feet movement, better anticipation, and just better defensive effort all around. A joy to watch!
The one thing this year's team does seem to struggle with a bit is fast-breaks. Oddly, the guards don't seem to know what to do with the ball when on the break. Odd, after watching them be almost flawless in recent years.

The D has vastly improved

Gonna be a problem for every opponent

Holding Kansas, which is a solid team, to 4 points in the first quarter was rather
humiliating for the dirty jayhawks

They attempted to strongarm the Hawks

to no avail

The offense will adjust, still early days and we have the talent and ability to do so

The incoming freshwomen are not afraid to shoot and I believe that have the license
to shoot anytime, when open

The first time I saw them on the floor, I didn't know their names and was surprised that
they were shooting without hesitation

Jen has done a remarkable job with the team

Outstanding, I Say

Agreed. The FR are playing loose and free. Clearly the highly-touted FR of today are not the FR players of 20 years ago!

I know we wanna credit Jensen and crew for the D. And we should.
That being said, in the postgame courtside interview, Jan seemed actually a little surprised by the defense.
Like..."How about that defense?" Not like "howbowdaaaat?" More like "Whoa, where'd that come from?"
Then again, I think she was referring to the first quarter where they held Kansas to...

4 POINTS ON SOMETHING LIKE 5....MAYBE 6.....ATTEMPTS

All caps, 'cause yah....I screamed it a little in my head.

I hear you...

I don't want this to come off as a shot at CC or any of the others we lost last year, but one of the things about having a generational talent is generally there are sacrifices made by those around her to help her reach that level.

While I could never say that I wouldn't have wanted CC's career to play out the way it did. There were often times she forced her shot or tried to do too much. Based on what were seeing, the best thing may have been for her to move on, because I think we're seeing sides of those returning players that we never would have seen before due to CC. This group could be very special and now it's their turn to shine.
