Iowa is NOT Going to go Spread Crazy

I think the pro-style offense remains viable, but the play calling needs to be more varied. Wisconsin runs a similar offense, but OC Paul Chryst is more likely to add wrinkles each week and the occasional trick play to keep the defense off balance. I am fine with the pro-style offense, just mix it up more. I always felt Iowa had a dynamic offense under Hayden even though the system was not that unique. Given, we tended to have better qb's, but maybe are back to having more skill at the position now.

The pro-style offense probably helps with our recruiting vs being just another spread team. Does Iowa get Rudock or some of the recent tight end recruits if we are a spread offense? I think this is a way of finding good players who fit the system here but may not work in other offenses.

Unless Miller makes huge strides over the next few weeks, I believe Hyde will be back at safety once Lowery returns. I refuse to believe the coaches were comfortable with the thought of Castillo starting at corner all year long. They probably thought he could fill in until BJ's return. The degree to which he was over-matched in the ISU game was too great to ignore, thus Hyde back to corner.

It was Miller's first start ... and some of the difficulties were due to communication issues. He's going to continue to develop and improve.

Besides, in the one game he was in, I notice him on plenty of occasions for good reasons ... and that is in contrast to what I was seeing from Sleeper. And, I'm a fan of Sleeper no less ... he just needs to play with a bit more confidence. Sometimes, when guys play with consistency ... they forget that we also need them to step up and also make plays.

I think the key here is that Iowa runs the same plays out of different formations. It is key for our running game that we succeed more from the two tight end sets and the I, to ease the pressure on the running game. Would I love to see the Hawks come out 2 drives each half and go no huddle, absolutely. Will that happen, probably not. Can we win games without doing that. Yes.

I think the o-line has blocked very well in the running game in all three games this season. Coker has to account for a single defender and hasn't done a good job of making a big play. He has had the opportunities and needs to make some plays when he is 1 on 1 with a defender. Iowa's play action game is so much tougher for teams to defend because they don't see it often, and usually we are really, really good at it. If Coker can't produce explosive plays in the running game, the play action is going to be where those come from.

Finally look at the teams we will play following the bye. Penn State and Northwestern are the only teams that boast solid defenses. Iowa should be able to push around Indiana and Minnesota. When we get Nolan MacMillan back this line will be very good at both phases.

Screw the no huddle. Just let VandenLong operate out of the shotgun more often.

Yeah, don't have to get caught up in no huddle discussions, just add the shot-gun a little more. No major change in philosophy, just an adjustment to a philosophy.

This Defense has proven in the ISU and Pitt game that they can't stop anyone. At times they could, but let's face it...ISU and Pitt are average teams at best. I don't care how many "tweaks" are made to the defense, how much improvement will we really see?

Look at teams like Okie State and Texas A&M. They may not have the best defenses, but they outscore teams so it doesn't matter. This Iowa offense is powerful and talented. I believe they can outscore any team they play this season. You do that by running the spread offense. Not only would it work, but it would shock alot of Big Ten teams. You just don't see that out of Iowa. This staff better get creative, but as usual I doubt they will.

Iowa first needs to tighten up its defense. You can't have too many 3 and outs and put the defense back on the field. We had no choice but to go to the no huddle against Pitt. I am guessing Kirk and co. may run a series of two or no huddle but other than that it will be the same Iowa offense ...
