I just ran the numbers on Iowa's bowl games, and some some interesting trends that favor Iowa in this one. Tennessee is only a 6 win team. Iowa is undefeated against 6 win teams in bowl games, and they are 8-1 in bowl games against teams with 7 or fewer wins. Iowa has not just won these games but have dominated many of them. Iowa has scored 266 points, to their opponents 120, that is an average margin of victory being 18.25 points per game. These games include Iowa drubbing of South Carolina in 2008, Texas Teach in 1996, Washington in 1995, and Texas in 1984. Simply put teams with put in bowls Iowa almost always out preforms teams with marginal regular season records. GO HAWKS, keep it up.

So I wonder what is Iowa's record when Iowa has 7 or fewer wins? Working off memory

1982 Peach Bowl Win
1984 freedom bowl win
1988 Peach bowl loss
1993 Alamo bowl loss
1995 Sun bowl win ?
1997 sun bowl loss ?
2001 alamo bowl win
2005 outback loss
2006 alamo loss
2010 insight win
2011 insight loss

Overall 5-6. Not bad for 6 or 7 win teams.

Well, in years where Iowa wins 6 or 7 games, they are being paired up with other similar teams rather than 10-11 win opponents. Bowl games tend to be roughly a 50/50 proposition, and that's about where Iowa's bowl record is. So I'd say that sounds about right as far as what we should expect for bowl record. Iowa has done fine in bowl games.

That is terrific news. Thanks for doing the leg work.

sometimes thats true, but the last 3 times Iowa went to bowls with 7 or less wins, the other team has had a much better record. It worked out ok against a 10-2 missouri team in the 2010 insight but not so well in the 2011 insight against a 10-2 Oklahoma.

That's true, but I'd argue that Iowa's 2010 team really was quite a bit better than a 7-5 team, on paper at least.. So really was a fairly even match up IMO. The 2011 Insight Bowl, yeah, Iowa was definitely a bit outmatched in that one.

They are all part of the overall trend. However if you limit the sample size to teams with KF as head coach Iowa is undefeated in bowls with 7 or fewer wins in the regular season, winning by an average of 12 points per game.

Hawknick, this gets you hot?!! That Iowa is great against mediocre teams in bowl games?!! What were expectations for this season's team? Were those expectations justified? Do you care anymore about failing to achieve those expectations than I do about your thread? I doubt it.

Simple to explain, Iowa underperforms in the regular season and ends up playing an inferior team in the bowl.

The level of some of these Iowa teams is underestimated. Two of these teams were Big 10 champions, and one was national champion. Fact still remains that Iowa dominates these teams!
