Iowa is 57th in NCAA scoring @ 73.6 ppg. Guess who is 56th?

Iowa and Iowa State BOTH average 73.6 ppg with Iowa State having one more game than Iowa. ISU is 56th in the country, Iowa is 57th. Needless to say, given the Lickliter era and even though Iowa is not making the NCAA tourney, this is a welcoming stat.

Keep in mind Iowa is doing this with much less talent than Iowa State and in a more defensive league. That is impressive considering the weapons ISU has and the offense Lickliter ran at Iowa. Iowa's defense on the other hand is why they have 13 loses.

good stat to know gives hope but how much of that offense is gone next year with gatens being gone or does it go up with our recruiting class coming in? Iowa State will suck again in 2 years when all the transfers from the B1G are gone lol i can't wait! I HATE ISU WITH A PASSION!!!!

Loss of Gatens is going to hurt no doubt but with the guys coming in and the experience returning plus another year of Fran's system, scoring should be around the same. Iowa is second in the Big Ten in scoring this year so it isn't a run-and-gun type conference. No single recruit will replace Matt's scoring but with 5 recruits (maybe 6) I would think they together will keep pace.

Some over in CyFan land have Hoiberg as the next Coach K but before everyone labels him an elite coach, let's see how he does in 2 years when he's actually forced to coach and develop a team without NBA talent already on team.

I'm just gonna throw this out there, but don't you think his plan is to continue to bring that kind of talent in?

First of all I like Gatens and I am appreciative of what he has done for Iowa during one of their worst stretches. But he is not irreplaceable and I can easily see Oglesby stepping into Gatens role without the offense skipping a beat. If Oglesby averaged the amount of minutes Gaten did as a freshman their stats practically mirror each other.

Some of these guys are "second chance" players and although it has worked for Freddie so far what happens when one of these guys he's giving a second chance to screws up hard? You play with fire and sooner or later you end up burned.

Do you just like to make stuff up? I have not been on the ISU site but I am sure not EVERYONE as you put it is making Fred out to be an elite coach. It's a bit early to say that but if he continues to put out 20 win seasons over the next 5 years he would definitely be a very, very good coach.

NBA talent? ISU has what one NBA caliber player on the roster and at best he is an off the bench NBA tweener. I think Royce is a very good college player but you act like Fred is just throwing out the basketball and he has Anthony Davis and Harrison Barnes on his team.

I guess it pains you too much to say at this point Fred has been able to make the transfers gel into a good unit along with the other players he had on the roster. Fred has done a pretty good job this year. ISU has played pretty well, I don't think they are a great team, but they have done very well considering it's year two in Freds coaching career after having zero coaching experince. I know he also lost his lead assitant Bobby Lutz who was supposably the brains and they have not seemed to miss too much of a beat.

I am more than glad that ISU is trending well as well as Iowa. Both teams are in different conferences so why not root for both teams. Oh and you can cheer against ISU for the one meaningless game that Iowa and ISU play each year.

Can't have it both ways. Can't bash Hoiberg for bringing in the transfers since it was too risky and then not give him credit for winning at least 20 games with them.

Iowa State is missing 2 key parts on this team----a true point guard and a true big man. And yet they are tied for 3rd in the Big 12 and have won 10 conference games.

It's been impressive watching this team figure itself out during the year. Iowa State was crazy inconsistent in November and December (and yet beat Iowa soundly and avoided a terrible non-conference loss). But they figured it out in time for conference play and have managed to be one of the more consistent teams in the Big 12. They have avoided a terrible loss (i.e. Kansas State at home to Oklahoma or Missouri at home to Kansas State) and have managed to beat a top 5 team at home. Their RPI is 43 with a strength of schedule at 69 (which will go up with the last 3 games). They have a record of 2-4 against the Sargarin top 25 and a 3-5 record against the top 50.

I know you guys wouldn't want to trade coaches, but I am thrilled we have who we do.

Who cares? Honestly? And why do we need to compare ourselves to the Clowns? We rank 285th in the country on defense ppg in a league you think plays better defense (another word for poor offense). So yeah we are scoring more but we also awful on defense and thus the reason we only have 14 wins. You have to coach both sides of the ball and we don't right now. We should score more if that's going to be our style

I think ISU plays defense though. Averaging 74 is OK if you play defense. Franny likes letting teams go off on us. 74 won't cut it then.

Your coach can't make funny faces though. I love the spittle flying!!!

Too bad we let teams score 72 a game. ISU is 66. Scoring 73 and allowing 72 is a great way to lose games. Oh, we know that.

Iowa also currently sits at 248th or something like that at made threes per game. I guess I see it as a positive to be scoring that high while making so few threes.

But Gatens wasn't a sophomore this year he was a senior. Someone posted offensive efficiency scores on the other site. Gatens was near the top of the BigTen at around a 12. Oglesby was a 4. He will not be able to replace all of Gaten's production next year, especially defense or rebounding. That doesn't mean we won't get better with the addition of new players and other players maturing, but Gatens isn't as easily replaceable as some people think. To be honest, I thought the same about Jarryd Cole last year and I was wrong. I think this team would have won 4 more games this year if Cole was still around. We're still a better team than last year, but that doesn't mean that Cole's absence isn't having an effect.

They've got a good group of guys coming in out of high school for next year. The transfers gave the program a jump start, but it's not what Hoiberg plans on building his program around, long-term.

What is Iowa averaging per game in the big ten? I would imagine it is lower than 73 because they had a pretty high scoring average in the non-conference.

Actually I just looked at it and they are at about 73+ in conference. They are all over the board though and have scored anywhere from 47-89 points. Which just shows the lack of consistency probably from so many young players.
