Overall, speed is a little disappointing at some of the skill positions along with size.

Thomas DNP for Mason City on Friday night. He was in street clothes with possible injury.

Recinos did a pretty good job in the kicking game for Mason City. He's their PK/P. From what I saw on Friday night, he missed a PAT & made a PAT. He punted a lot in the game with some pretty good punts.

OG Austin Holzer Cedar Rapids Kennedy 6'3" 260 lbs. 5.41 40--From what I understand, he is planning on taking his Mormon mission upon graduating from High School.

Daniel Vega-6'4" 260--Cedar Rapids Xavier--saw him play on Friday night. The kid is a beast on that very tough Saints defense.

Some players shining during the playoffs that were forgotten from earlier lists:

WR Ronald Nash Sioux City East 6'1" 195 lbs. 4.48 40, 275 Bench Max, 35" Vertical--Offers from Army, Northern Iowa, South Dakota & South Dakota State; Being recruited by Army & Iowa.

DE Chase Kern Sioux City East 6'4" 225 lbs. 4.89 40--Offers from South Dakota & South Dakota State; Being recruited by Iowa.

OL Luke Schultheiss Williamsburg 6'4" 260 lbs.--Offers N/A; Being recruited by N/A.

LB Kris Idhe Guttenburg Clayton Ridge 6'1" 200 lbs. 4.75 40--Offers N/A; Being recruited by N/A.

Nash did a lot of damage in the first round game against Johnston. A WR, he lined up @ QB for both of his TD's.

When I see a list like this with the size and speed of these kids, I'm reminded what a disadvantage Iowa football is at if they are depending on these kids to compete vs. B10 teams.

Granted the size and speed stats are don't ell the nearly the whole story, but this size kid is all over Chicago ( a short 3 hour drive)area football. 5x this number - why don't the Hawks recruit more in Chicago?

5'9 166 - 4.85 rb
5'9' 194 rb, 5.06.
db's that run 4.90 don't play on our sophomore team

DB Jake Gervase Davenport Assumption
6'0" 160 4.7 40
Recruited by Iowa and Iowa State

Saw this kid last night. He did not leave the field. Had one punt return where he really turned on the jets and just about took it to the house. He brought the lumber on Defense. Kennedy was cautious not to throw his way with his team leading 8 INT's.

And, he was Assumption's QB too, right?

I don't think Ames' Clifford Kwaw-Mensah is committed anywhere right now. That kid is damn good, averaging 10 ypc and has just under 2600 yards this season. Almost no one has put up numbers like that in 4A, but he still doesn't seem to be generating much buzz in terms of recruiting.

He would be a great addition to the Iowa program. I hope they make it happen.

Another player I forgot about in this class:

Ben Wellman RB/LB Neola, IA--2,029 yards, 22 TD's & 114 tackles.

I always get a chance to see a lot of 4A football. My thoughts:
The ICW qb Boland was the best running qb in the conference and the best throwing qb in the conference. Absolute steal for iowa. (BTW, ICW has had unbelievable teams the last few years with nothing to show for it.)
Go to a Xavier game, you see Nelson on defense because he's tall. But you end up watching Vega because he's so dynamic, powerful. He is the best player on the field everytime he steps on a high school field. I really hope Iowa connects with him. Nelson is good of course, I just think he brings a lot more at TE than he does DE. At Xavier he plays a lot more DE, but that's also due to their philosophy: Our O only needs to score a point because yours won't score on us! They put all their studs on defense.

I'm going to the UNI-Dome tonight for the WDM Valley-Dowling Catholic semifinal game with winner taking on the winner of Bettendorf-CR Xavier.

Going to see the following players:

Valley--RB Tyus Mason & WR Anthony Holmes

Dowling--WR/CB Rico Gafford & Jr. QB Ryan Boyle

I know Bettendorf & CR Xavier have some players as well.

Class 4-A Finals are set with CR Xavier taking on Dowling Catholic. CR Xavier beat Bettendorf 31-7 & Dowling Catholic beat WDM Valley 17-3 in the semifinals.

In the Dowling-Valley game, Mason ran 23 times for 102 yards with 25 coming on the first play of the game and he picked up 49 more on his first three carries of the second half. And those were all yards between the 20-yard lines. Holmes had one catch for 20 yards. Gafford had 2 catches for 15 yards and dropped Mason for no gain on fourth-and-2 at the Maroons' 20. Boyle was 5 of 10 passing for 40 yards and 25 for 200 yards rushing. A good game for the most part, a stout defense gets job done for Dowling.

In the CR Xavier-Bettendorf game, Miller ran 18 times for 23 yards. Quinton Scholer was 6 of 14 passing for 162 yards with one TD. Hunter Baldus, who entered the game with 3 catches for 45 yards this season, had one catch for 73 yards and scored a touchdown. But the player who caught the attention was Wes Gardner. He returned an interception for a 17 yard TD, rushed for a 5 yard TD and returned 2 63 yard punt returns for TD's. A plucky defense was key for Xavier.

The key players from CR Xavier worth watching are WR/DE Hunter Baldus, QB/CB Quinton Scholer, RB/CB Brendan Miller, RB/CB Wes Gardner, RB/LB Daniel Vega, RB/LB Sean Ickes, OT/DT Cole Turner, WR/DE Matt Nelson & WR/CB Miles Sullivan.

Heard a lot about Miller, Vega, Turner, Nelson & Sullivan during the season. Baldus, Scholer, Gardner & Ickes had a big game against Bettendorf.

Will be a good game between Dowling Catholic-CR Xavier for the Class 4-A championship game.

Dowling won 44-13 over CR Xavier for the Class 4-A championship last night.

Junior QB Ryan Boyle finished with 12 of 14 passing for 283 yards, 1 INT & 4 TD's along with 21 for 82 yards rushing for Dowling. He'll be a top 2015 prospect in Iowa.

Senior QB Quinton Scholer finished with 7 of 19 passing for 95 yards, 1 INT & 1 TD for Xavier. He was under heavy pressure most of the game.

Senior RB Brendan Miller, who entered the game with 1,428 yards rushing, finished with 12 carries for 35 yards for Xavier. He had a tough time finding any running room.

Senior WR/DB Rico Gafford caught passes for 23 and 35 yards to set up touchdowns for Dowling & gave CB Miles Sullivan fits in 1-on-1 situations. Gafford played well on the defensive side of the ball with an outstanding pass break up in the end zone. He'll be a nice player at the next level, hopefully for the Hawkeyes.

Matt Nelson was playing TE/DE for Xavier. He had a nice catch on a drive that I saw. Dowling ran away from his side on defense from what I saw. He'll be a good prospect for the Hawkeyes as he matures and fills out his 6'8" frame under Chris Doyle's weight training program. He's currently 6'8" 250 lbs.

Daniel Vega was playing a lot on the DL for Xavier. He played a good game from what I saw and was a match up problem at times. It'll be interesting to see if the Hawkeyes will offer him a scholarship for the 2014 recruiting class. He's currently 6'3" 245 lbs.

Cole Turner was a key part on the OL for Xavier. He was doing his best to keep the rush down and keep the line together, but Dowling kept coming after Scholer and Miller. He did well maintaining his side of the OL. It'll be interesting to see if the Hawkeyes will offer him a scholarship for the 2014 recruiting class. He's currently 6'4" 275 lbs.

That's what I was able to evaluate from the game.

Wondering where Iowa sits with the following that made the Des Moines Sunday Register Elite All-State Team:

WR Allen Lazard Urbandale--Three-time Elite pick caught 49 passes for 1,065 yards and 16 TDs; An Iowa State recruit; DB last two years and WR this year.

WR Alex Brammer Ames--Led the state with 89 catches for 1,496 yards.

OL Keegan Render Indianola--Repeat Elite selection will play at Iowa; broke bone in foot during basketball practice last Wednesday.

OL Ross Pierschbacher Cedar Falls--Earned Elite honors last year; Alabama recruit.

OL Ross Reynolds Waukee--Powerful blocker for 10-win team.

OL Landon Carney Pleasant Valley--Heavy hitter at 6'5" 280 lbs.

QB Sam Straub Ames--Passed for 3,221 yards & 31 TDs.

RB Tyus Mason WDM Valley--Rushed for 1,000 or more yards three times.

RB Duncan Ferch West Marshall--Two-time Elite pick surpassed 2,000 yards rushing.

RB Clifford Kwaw-Mensah Ames--Led all of the state's rushers with 2,086 yards.

DL John Swisher WDM Dowling Catholic--Relentless tackler had 17 sacks entering title game.

DL Matt Nelson CR Xavier--Tall (6'8") lineman who'll play at Iowa.

DL A.J. Allen Waukee--Strong player on both sides of the ball.

DL Daniel Vega CR Xavier--Guided one of state's top defenses this fall.

LB Nathan Clayberg Pella--Led Pella to 11-1 record & semifinal berth.

LB Jake Lewton WDM Dowling Catholic--Compiled 89 tackles leading up to state finals.

LB Dakota Miller WDM Valley--Defensive leader for one of state's top teams.

LB Taylor Niehaus Carroll Kuemper--Led Kuemper into state championship game.

DB Rico Gafford WDM Dowling Catholic--Dynamic two-way player was scoring threat.

DB Jake Gervase Davenport Assumption--Intercepted eight passes & led team to playoffs.

DB Matt Hoeg Waukee--Grabbed nine interceptions & returned two for TD.

P Miguel Recinos Mason City--Averaged 43 yards & also kicked 58-yard FG.

Some of these players are obvious, but just curious what Iowa sees in these players.
