Iowa has a home game on the 20th Anniversary of Chris Street's passing

They should do one of those virtual Tupac things and bring him out during the lineup. WTF let him score the first virtual basket on a classic virtual Street put back.

That was really a sad day in Hawkeye history. I can remember exactly where I was when I saw the scroll at bottom of TV screen.

Sounds like a real class act move by Fran or Barta to set this up. Hope they do something special.

I grew up in a small town just south of Indianola, Chris' hometown. I was about 5 - 8 years ahead of him, but remember what a great HS athlete he was besides the obvious basketball tablet. Good quarterback. His family had a convenience store that I visited a few times

I've been hoping they would play at home that day. Preferably against Michigan or Michigan State.

I was at the Chris Street Iowa Basketball golf outing today at Finkbine. Coach announced this at the reception this evening and mentioned they will honor Chris that night.

Please..don't put Tupac and a remembrance of Chris Street in the same thead.

Everyone should wear Street on the back of the jersey.

This would be cool.

I remember the night and next day after that car accident. It was announced on the late night local news that Street and another UI student had been in a crash but I think the passenger survived. They let us out of school at noon or maybe 1 the next day because the roads were so icy. I always walked home from school but it was so bad my dad actually picked me up. I remember falling down several times just walking a few blocks from school, I was only 12 and I remember pushing our minivan ('90 Dodge Caravan) into the garage b/c it was so icy my dad couldn't drive it in. It was one if the nastiest ice storms I can remember. I think every kid in Iowa City has 'CMS 40' sharpied on their bball shoes the rest of that winter.

Coach announced they will wear the same patches that were worn 20 years ago. CMS 40.

By the way, the other student injured was his girlfriend who attended Iowa and was from Indianola. She is married to a former Iowa wrestler now.

I will be there for sure for that game, he was a family friend (not close but I knew him and talked to him, and growing up as a small town southern Iowa hawk fan he was as close to an idol as I had at the time). That is definitely one of the red letter days in my life.

My mom was one of his teachers at Mormon Trail, and my family is still friends with the Streets. My sister was also named after Chris.

I was nearly three years old when Chris died. Not a day goes by where I don't feel a little cheated for never having known him. I'm actually in the beginning stages of a long-form project on Chris for the Daily Iowan, and I hope that through that, I might get to know him a little.

My son is named after him. I was in junior high when he passed, I already wore #40 in his honor before the accident so it was a pretty tough time for me. I wonder how many people on here no anything about Mormon Trail high school!

There have been many fine young men from the state who have played for the Hawkeyes through the years in all sports. Chris Street embodied the spirit of kids who grew up in this state and dreamed of playing for Iowa. His loss hit this state hard...hell it hit me hard and I didn't know him personally.

His effort against Duke, his final game as a Hawkeye as I recall, was indicative of his time at Iowa. I'll never forget the incredible comeback at East Lansing after his death, and the win vs. Michigan at Carver Hawkeye...the loudest I've ever heard CHA.

As a long time Hawk fan, I applaud the University on recognizing this anniversary.

Wow. Hard to believe 20 years have passed. Like many of you who are old enough to remember, I bet we all recall exactly where we were when we heard the news. A sad day in Hawkeye history.

I was a student at Iowa State (but always a Hawkeye) working at the Iowa State Daily as assistant sports editor. Earlier that year I covered the Iowa/ISU game at Carver. Since none of my peers cared to cover the Hawkeyes I was able to go to the media gathering to interview players and coaches. I still remember the shirt Chris was wearing. Strange the things we recall. He was just a good kid (of course, I was a kid, too). In the words of Tom Davis, Chris represented all that was good about Iowa.

A life taken away much too soon. But he gave us all memories for a lifetime.
