Iowa Football: Position-by-Position Spring Practice Preview (Bleacherreport)

Wow, This is depressing.

Returning Starter: Kevonte Martin-Manley (Jr.)*
Others in the Mix: Jordan Cotton (Sr.)#, Don Shumpert (Sr.), Jacob Hillyer (So.), Tevaun Smith (So.), Cameron Wilson (R.Fr.)

This summer, the Hawks will ready themselves for what Ryan Suchomel of HawkCentral.comreferred to as a "pile" receivers who were specifically recruited to play the kind of vertical passing game that Greg Davis wants

Thanks for posting. Lots of names that are unfamiliar listed here, which is fine. If only the author could write as well as he can grow a moustache.

I kind of thought it was depressing as a whole too. Not many players that have made significant contributions, lots of people that have very little if any game experience, geez.

Also didn't like this part:

Martin-Manley, who refers to himself as a "possession receiver," is not ideal for Davis' offense.

Would like to see some things that are more suited to his talents, instead of trying to make him fit the offense.

Only thing not depressing about this report is that Ferentz will be one year closer to being gone.

Is that poncharello from chips or our middle linebacker? I cannot tell the difference

Its all a ploy. In a two-year process KF gets rid of all the experienced offensive assistants. He brings in Davis who will fail miserably. At the end of this year, the hot seat gets officially turned on. To appease Iowa fans, KF fires Davis and his recruited assistants. The only offensive assistant left in the program? Brian Ferentz. BF's meteoric rise to OC complete.

Heh, heh, heh.

The players who did contribute didn't show much potential either, so double geezzzz. Hope the new coaching members make a difference.

- The o-line and linebackers look really solid.
- The d-line looks promising but still young.
- Please let our running backs stay healthy :( there is 3 really good ones there especially behind the o-line
- QB obviously the biggest question mark going into the season but it really can't be worse than last year.
- Secondary has splashes of talent and big depth concerns.
- WR and TE should be better than last year.. certainly has depth issues.

I'd say the biggest factor is going to be depth again.. Any injuries will hurt big time just like last year. I will say that last years red shirts all look pretty promising and should help a bit in the depth department.

After reading the article, the areas I have concerns about do have a positive spin to them.

Strengths - Offensive Line, Linebackers, tight end - three good, young, enthusiastic coaches.

Areas that are strong, but not quite a strength - Kicking game, Defensive Line, running back - new special teams coach; our most experienced coach, of course the D-line problem went to Nebraska last year; new running back coach as well.

Weakness - Quarterback, wide reciever, defensive backs - new WR coach should be a great help, as will the recruits. Cotton is the only reciever to get better last year, however that might be because he finally stayed healthy; Defensive backs should be better with Parker going back as position coach; as for the quartebacks, be concerned, no experienced players coming back and the same coach that saw Vandeberg digress.

Cannot wait for the spring game.

Oh they are a pile alright.

Honestly, I think the defense overachieved last year and they weren't the reason we lost to Iowa State, Purdue, and Nebraska. With another year, and only one significant loss (Hyde), there is reason to be very optimistic that we will have young players step up. Spears, McMinn, Ott, and Meier will all have another year of development and we just need one or two to step up on the DL. Cooper, LTP, and C Davis should provide a good rotation inside and Cooper can move outside if necessary. Hopefully, we can also get one of the RS Freshman to play like Cooper did last year inside.

If we can get a QB to step up, and make reads and the right throws, I think we will be much better than people think. We are going to be able to run the ball on just about every big 10 team...and do it consistently. These guys were clicking and coming off the ball very well, prior to Scherff and Donnal going down. After that it was a mess of inconsistency. There is significant talent on the offensive line and there may eventually be four draft picks starting this year. I think the way that is shaping up. I think people have the wrong perception of the Ruddock situation also. I've heard the well, he could break into the lineup last year as JVB struggled. I still feel that was a result of JVB needing the reps early in the season to get comfortable in the new offense, and late, he was a senior and KF felt he didn't deserve to be pulled. Loyalty is one trait where Ferentz has be very consistent. I think Rudduck is the guy.

Lot of returnees from a underperforming year. Hardly anyone stood out last year.

I think the DB's will do a much better job now that Parker is coaching them again. Really Blythe, Scherf and Donnel all were injured- that is 3 starters out of the OL. Our run game was not bad before that. After that no one respected the run game which made passing that much more difficult. I think Ward, Welsh and Simmons will step up based on what I have heard. Also remember that Faith and J Johnson will be playing this year. I think Johnson starts or at the very least gets major minutes. Faith is also a major player in my projections.

You are right...lots of returnees from an underperforming year. That's freaking good news. We took our lumps last year with the youngest football team we have had. Alot of us felt last year was going to be a tough year, especially defensively (see several John Miller articles/posts), but the good thing is that young teams get a year older and another year of maturity. We will be better.

I think alot of people stood out last year...some prior to season ending injuries, after which we went on the 6 game losing streak. If you don't think Scherff, Donnal, Cooper, Weisman, Bullock, Cotton, Hitchens, and LTP stepped up, you are wrong. I would also include Van Sloten and Blythe in that discussion. When you look at the roster and depth chart, with the solid returning lettermen, we will need a similar group of players to step up. I think it will happen.

I don't think it's any mystery that our season will hinge on what happens at the QB position. That's the difference between 6-6 if we suck there, and 9-3 if we get an upside surprise. Unlike last year, I'm much more confident that the OL will be very good, and our DL has many more options. Cooper, LTP, C. Davis, and Alvis give us a good nucleus of players to build around on the DL. We just need a couple guys to step up there to build the rotation. Between Spears, Meier, J Johnson, Ekatite, Ott, McMinn, and Hardy...I expect a few of these guys will make the leap. The back seven should be good. We are set at LB with three seniors, and we have a ton of guys competing in the secondary...all with some serious upside potential. If Parker can get them to play together, we are pretty athletic back there. Young, but athletic.

I'm not all doom and gloom for 2013. I think there is a much greater chance at upside surprise than there was going into 2012.

KMM has to be the only receiver in organized football who refers to himself as a "possession receiver". Don't they all think they're explosive deep threats?
