All stats are up to date through the Purdue game as of 10/22/19

Note that all career totals come from the University of Iowa's website and official media guide. I simply have added in the current players.

I'll try to keep this up to date as best as I can as the season goes on. If any other players get close to cracking into one of the categories I'll add them. If you notice anybody getting close to cracking one of the categories or if you spot any errors or miscalculations feel free to let me know and I'll fix it. This is meant to allow people to find out where the current players rank among the all time Iowa greats and create discussion on where people think they will end up in the respective categories. Enjoy.

AJE and career sacks? TFL?

AJE and career sacks? TFL?

I knew someone was going to ask about those but was hoping it wouldn't be the first reply. ;)

The 2018 Iowa media guide doesn't break much out for defensive stats but mostly just lists the all time leader. I think they may have used to detail them out but I don't have a copy of any older version to piece meal the categories together. Maybe 2019 will have it. So for now, I wasn't sure where I could find accurate data for those so I passed on adding them. Note they do have career interceptions (min 8) and tackles (min 200) listed so I could probably add those.

That said, AJE is at 15 sacks and 22 TFL. The career record for both of those is held by Jared DeVries with 43 sacks and 79 TFL.

Considering the circumstances, what Tavian Banks was able to accomplish here was incredible. He was behind Sedric Shaw on the depth chart three of his four years, missed much of 1995 with a broken wrist, was hampered with a bad ankle the second half of 1997, and on top of all that they had to figure out how to get the ball in Tim Dwight's hands as well. In a different era under different circumstances he could easily have all the career rushing records.

Robert Smith was one of my all time favorite Hawks. He could really take the top off a defense, and open up underneath to intermediate stuff for Bill Happel, Scott Helverson and Harmon.

For one season, it be hard to top what Shonn Greene did in 2008. Unbelievable consistency. If Shonn had been the feature back just one other year he would probably hold all the career records. But Tavian Banks, in the first six games of 1997, was on pace to top even Shonn Greene 2008. But his bad ankle hampered him severly the second half of that season.

They've never given a top ten in Sacks or TFL for as long as I remember. Just records for single game, season, career leader and then the year by year leader like they do for most of the the stats. The first media guide I ever got was in 1993 when I was in 8th grade, so it's not something they just got rid of over the years. I wish they'd add all time punting, kick return and punt return top 10s also and a list of all time 100 yard rushing and receiving games like some schools do, but those would likely take a lot of extra work at this point and take up more space. I'm a stathead though, so I can never get enough of this stuff, and I like it when guys that might have been forgotten get noted here and there.

I worked for TCI Cable (now Mediacom) from 1991-2002. I was local sports producer/director for seven of those years. We would get the Iowa Hawkeye media guides for football, basketball, and several other sports every year, as well as weekly press release notes and other tidbits. I could spend an hour sifting through a media guide. I even got odd guides sent to us from Iowa State, Indiana, Michigan State, etc.

I kept some of those guides well after I made a career change to a different occupation. I probably still have a couple floating around the house somewhere.

Thanks for the info! I've never gotten a physical guide myself, just dabbled over to the website that always has the most recent one every so often through the years. I thought maybe they listed some of those other stats at one time but perhaps not.

Maybe if AJE has a good enough year they'll do some extra digging and start providing more data. One can hope anyways.

Sorry for the delay, I forgot I started one of these for football as well.

Toren Young and Mehki Sargeant are both just over 1000 yards of scracking the Top 10. They aren't moving up the ladder at a very quick pace at the moment but if both stay and play another year they could both make a run at it.
