Iowa Football - A New Level?

I think what we are noticing now is the quality depth we now have on the roster. It used to be Iowa would have a couple of good seasons but then might have to completely reload. Now, it is next man in ... With a coaching staff that has been in place for 12/13 years, players can count on stability ... And not many coaches around are as good as this staff in making players better.

I dont see the accuracy problem like you do. Sure all qb's have bad games and such, but if you watch the OH St game, (the one true game we can go off), almost every dropped pass was not on him. Like I said he throws harder than Stanzi, he has a better arm, and the TE'S and wide outs just were not used to the ball having that much velocity behind them.

He made some poor reads/poor passes in addition to the drops, though. He struggled mightily with that intermediate throw (between the LB's and DB's) that Stanzi excelled at, and also the deflection reception by Moeaki was a lucky break on a poor pass/read. Now granted, the required touch on that intermediate pass is something that is learned over time. But we haven't been given much of an opportunity to see if he has indeed improved on that. Which again takes me back to my potential vs. results argument. I think JVB has the potential, he's shown me more than enough to make me believe that much. But sometimes it sounds as though people already think he's arrived as a finished product, which is simply not the case (at least not to our knowledge).

Iowa has some quality depth, but if you look at the recruiting, Iowa seldom gets a 5 star recruit. The Hawkeyes get the occasional 4 star recruit, but generally make to the national stage with home grown and 3 star recruits.
Iowa is one coaching change from a downturn, but I doubt that they would stay down as they did in the 60s-70s.

9 schools in 4 states. Alaska, Texas, California, and Iowa.

JVB has an AWFULLY long way to go to reach Stanzi's level of accomplishment. Stanzi was the first Iowa QB drafted into the NFL in a very long time. I'm amazed at how many people continue to downplay his accomplishments.

Stanzi is on the very short list of all-time Iowa great QBs. Duncan, Long, Hartlieb, Tate, and Stanzi are in my top 5.

If JVB "makes us forget" about Stanzi, then we'll be playing in multiple BCS bowls.

Would have to agree JVB has played one quality game so far the other two he started not so good. Ricky has won 3 bowl games including a BCS game. Did not always look great, but a winner.

... but I was also usually bigger than everyone else. However, the more pressing issue in your post, how could you consider me unlikable? I'm delightful!

Is that because you flunked so many times? As far as the OP of this thread - absurd, especially the Stanzi comment.

The numbers are skewed by two poor performances against Minnesota and Northwestern in 2009. Granted, taking those games away leaves a VERY small sample to judge him on. But the physical skills are there. He has good footwork, is very accurate when he accurately reads the defense (this is the biggest question mark going into 2011), is nimble on the run (not a scrambler, but not a statue by any means), solid pocket presence, and has a cannon for an arm (see: 2:44 mark of the video).

tm3308, you would have to remind of this game! Those dropped passes drove me nuts! Stross alone had 3 dropped passes that could have been TDs. Probably cost us the game. The five passes after the 2:20 mark are a good show.

A lot of people point to the Northwestern & Minnesota game. Northwestern you cannot count, as for some odd reason the coaches NEVER had JV play with the first team offense. I am still dumbfounded by that. This is Not the NFL, this is college. These guys need the reps, if even a few, to keep them in somewhat of a rhythm and give them the experience.... The Minnesota game was just a joke. I mostly blame coaching on that one.

I like JV seeking and hitting the secondary receivers. That is huge!!

Until he learns to read the blitz and react much quicker, he will be serviceable at best. The reason he had a decent game at OSU and such poor games against NU and UM is because the latter two teams blitzed him. OSU went the "make the rookie QB beat you" route. Well, until the OT when they blitzed him and he went deer in the headlights and it was game over on one play.

On a side note, how frustrating has it been to watch a young QB come in and throw the ball all over the field when Iowa adopts the same strategy as OSU adopted against Vandy? My belief is you should beat a young QB in the offensive backfield, not the defensive backfield.

How much of a problem is it for Iowa being, well...Iowa? I mean, it has to be a tough sell convincing a prospect to move to Iowa. I am not saying the state has a bad reputation, just a bland one. When people ask me where I'm from, I usually just answer Iowa (although I lived in 6 states growing up, I went to HS in Iowa), and seldom is the reaction to that positive.

This is exactly what i cam in here to post. We still live in a state with some of the worst weather and least amount of stuff to do. That's why we'll never be recruiting with the big boys. Doesn't mean we wont be competing with them on the field. It's just not a sexy school for an 18 year old kid.

Look at the second half stats for RS for the last five games...including the InSight. Mediocre at best...and no game winning drives in 4 tries.

I know at this juncture, it's a stretch to say JVB will be a better QB, but it's my opinion based on what I've seen and the fact that he has had a year to mature in the system. I don't think he will have stage fright and I think he has shown the big stage doesn't intimidate him. I'll look you up after 7-8 games to see how my prediction is looking. I'll take the heat if I'm wrong.

So we're going to compare the Vandenberg of two years ago (a redshirt freshman) to the fifth year Stanzi. Vandenberg has now had two more years to develop and by all accounts is a very bright young man. Why is it presumptous to figure that a kid with his intelligence, size and skill set would not have developed well beyond his poised play as a redshirt freshman in Columbus? I am very much looking forward to watching him play behind an experienced, skilled offensive line with a beast of a running back. Seems like a pretty good position for him to find himself in.
