Iowa Basketball Records That Will Never Be Broken

Whatcha got out there? I'll start with a record that I believe is safe for the ages.

Most career points by a father/son combo

Roy and Devyn Marble, 4,110 points.

Tom Davis, highest average of necktie adjustments per game.

Hate to say it, but probably also the 30 wins in 1987 and the 18-0 start. Hard for me to see another Iowa team that elite.

I'd say both of those are safe. Reaching an NCAA Regional Final is also going to be very tough to match.

A few more from the TD era:

1988: Scoring 77 points in a half vs Michigan.

1988-1989 Season: Giving up 100+ points in 7 games (69-70 team was close)

1990: Giving up 127 vs Michigan

1981-1990: Most wins - 207 & 2nd best winning percentage of .668 over a decade. 1941-50 was slightly better win % but played 100 less games.

I'd say both of those are safe. Reaching an NCAA Regional Final is also going to be very tough to match.

1988-1989 Season: Giving up 100+ points in 7 games (69-70 team was close)

1990: Giving up 127 vs Michigan

1981-1990: Most wins - 207 & 2nd best winning percentage of .668 over a decade. 1941-50 was slightly better win % but played 100 less games.

Obviously the 77 points have to be taken with some context.

Michigan was up 35 at the half.

I blew off a night class (the one I shared with Michael Ingram who also obviously wasn't there either) to watch that game at the Field House bar. It was over by the second TV time out.

While not a record, a much more impressive accomplishment was scoring 53 in the first half and 98 for the game in 1989 at Chapel Hill.

I still remember my father asking after that game was over. "How in the hell do you score 100 points and still lose by 20?"

I didn't have the guts to correct him and say they "only" lost by 17.

I had forgotten about 77 in the loss.
Iowa dropped 75 in the first half on Notre Dame on March 14, 1970 in the ME Regional consolation game (after the heartbreaker loss to Jacksonville).
