Just an FYI, spank, the BTN is probably an additional fee on most. On DishNetwork it is an additional $6 per month over what I would otherwise get.
I am not complaining, but am simply stating it probably is an extra amount, however slight it might be. I believe I also get the NFL Network with that extra fee, though I could be wrong.
Anyone that had the BTN and switched away from it under the premise that most of the games they wanted to watch were on ESPN probably didn't wait around for basketball season when they signed up. They were just ignorant to cancel the BTN if they did so under the premise that most games were being shown on ESPN, as can be evidenced by any complaining they might now be doing. Since they actually pay for ESPN they are rather disingenuous to reminisce about the old days on CBS, or whatever they want to complain about, since the nature of their complaint is cost and they are paying for ESPN already.
The only people that really have a leg to stand on in complaining are in-state Iowa residents who were getting pretty much all basketball games for free at one time. But with the BTN there is more revenue than any conference in the country, which allows us to keep coaches and have great facilities, which in turn gives us the chance to compete at the highest levels much easier than other schools. Also, there is so much more sports programming in terms of actual games that complaining about the "crappy" programs, or whatever iowafarmgirl's comment was is irrelevant because you get all of the wrestling and women's basketball that you would never get otherwise that $6 per month is a very good trade off. And you can cancel it from March to August if you really want to.
In brief, my comments would be that if you want to ***** about paying, then we could go be a part of the B12 where they only get money that the school can bring in and don't share revenues equally. How much TV revenue do you think we would be getting in that conference? I'll tell you how much. Based upon Missouri's take of about $8M a year, we would probably get less than that, versus the roughly $21M we get now.
So chew on that for a while the next time you want to whine about the BTN. It's three years in (or is it four now) people. Get over the change in the broadcast model. Some people are such big whiners it is unreal.
