AW, MP and any other recruits considering Iowa should watch this youtube highlight of this game. I lived in Chapel Hill then and was at the game sitting near the Iowa Bench. The president of the company I worked for was Jim Heavner who was the color man for Woody Durham (play by play) of the Tarheel sports radio network. Heavner got the tickets for us and then said don't ever ask for tickets again after he saw the 4 of us jumping up and down in black and gold around some pretty bigwig Carolina donors.

Iowa can beat North Carolina and has beaten them several times along with Duke. The Hawkeyes shut that crowd up that day and at the party at our house after the game, all the Carolina fans quickly left when we turned on the VCR to rewatch the game. This is my favorite away game victory I attended. Second would be Michigan is 2002.

Iowa beat them the following year at Carver Hawkeye with Ray Thompson leading the way.
BTW, that team had so much talent. To bad Ray Thompson was ruled ineligible for the NCAA Tournament, not by NCAA standards however.

I have those games on tape somewhere back in the archives. I remember Roy Marble conning the officials into thinking he was fouled at a critical point in the game instead of Eddie Horton, who was a poor FT shooter. Marble made the FT's and we went on to win the game.

Ed Horton was a Beast that game. JR Reid wasn't. That was a very satisfying victory for Mr. Davis and the Hawks.

I thought we had a legitimate shot at the national title with Ray Thompson that year. Eligible by NCAA and Big Ten standards, but not Hunter Rawlings standards. Coach Davis heard about it the night before they were to leave for the tourney. Ray practiced with the team up to then.

I was in the Navy stationed at Pearl Harbor. Our ship was in drydock so we were staying in barracks at Ford Island. I remember watching game with a shipmate of mine from North Carolina. I was drinking throughout the game so I was pretty tanked afterwards and he was silent. One of the proudest moments of mine being a Hawkeye fan!
