Iowa at Illinois

I would like to check Champagne off of my list of B1G road games this year. It has been a while since we have played Illinois. There are already tickets on stub hub, with decent seats at a lower price than anything at Kinnick. Tickets may get cheaper if Illinois sucks, or more expensive if we are undefeated. Does anyone know if there is a certain section or area iowa fans may sit? Or is it like a hawkeye invasion, i.e. Purdue last year?

It's not the best place in the world to watch a game, and of course, they hate Iowa fans.

Having said that, I've enjoyed some games there over the years. Iowa fans typically sit in one of the end zones (the bowled in one) and in other ****** seats at Zupke (Memorial).

I havent been there in 30 years but then most of us hawk fans were low in SW grandstand about endzone to 15 yard line

I went in 2004. Most of the Iowa fans were in the endzone to 10 yd quadrant. But I was at the 30 and there were a lot of Hawk fans around as well.

The tailgating was pretty blah, but we did find a park a few blocks away from Memorial that was nothing but Iowa fans. So that improved the experience.

Big old stadium built as a WORLD WAR ONE Memorial. We actually sat in the upper deck a couple of times (not hard seats to get) and had great sight lines.

They have great fans and when Illinois is good it is a very difficult place in which to play. One of our great teams (1983) went over there rated #4 in the nation and got spanked, 33-0. Chief Illiniwek was a great tradition but the NCAA took that all away.

Plenty of super college bars downtown, which is easy walking distance from the stadium.

This is a great, natural rival and I for one am glad they are in our division now.

Already bought my tickets. Bought the cheapest ones and I plan on sitting anywhere. This plan could backfire if Illinois shocks everyone, wins some games and get people excited.. Not too worried about that. Expect a Hawkeye invasion.

If we are undefeated or 1 loss it will be hard to keep Iowa fans from going. I think I might even make the trip.

I went back in 2006 and IIRC it was Juice Williams first career start that day.

Iowa won to set up the GameDay showdown with OSU the next week.

Tailgating was terrible and the stadium was pretty empty. Hopefully Hawkeyes take over C-U this fall.

Illini have a soft non-league slate, so they could actually be in the hunt for that elusive 6th win at some point. But, I really doubt they will do well in the league. They are a bb school...100%.

Is this serious? Illinois football fan may be the biggest fair weather fan in all of college sports.

Going back to my 2004 experience, it amazed me how many Illini fans left at halftime and didn't return. It was still a game at that point, and although it was windy, it wasn't overly cold. I ended up asking my cousin(who played for the Illini in the 90s) if that was the norm. He indicated that I wouldn't believe how many people attend the game just to watch the band. When the band is done, they leave. Said it wasn't always that way, but it had regressed to that point.

Again, this was ten years ago and things may be different there now. Count me in as someone happy we will be playing them regularly again. It's a good rivalry. My favorite game in the series has to be the 1990 game when Nick Bell ran all over them.

Holy crap, was it windy that day! All the scoring was in one direction. I remember the flag girls in the band were getting blown over during the halftime show.

Yep I remember that as well. Pretty funny. It was also funny when they put Beutjer in late in the game. The Iowa crowd went crazy when they announced him....almost like we were mocking him(some clever chants as well). He actually played ok that day and threw a late TD pass.

A friend of mine moved to Champagne. She went to the movies with her husband and when they came out their tires were slashed. When the police showed up the cop pointed to their Iowa license plate and said that's the problem. You need to get that changed.

I think this would be a great road game for us fans to take over and create a "Kinnick East". We still owe them for that Orange Crush stunt their students pulled off at Carver a few years ago.

Was there in 2006. 11am game, we rolled into C-U around 8am or a little before. We were worried that there wouldn't be any parking available and that we would get stuck in traffic.

Nope. Drove right in. No congestion and hardly anyone in the parking lots....except Iowa fans. Stadium was only about 2/3 full, and a lot of them were Hawk fans. Nice stadium. I would consider going again.

Agree. Last season, the Illini fan base showed their true colors with the classic photo of students trying to create a giant I in the stands, but lacked enough numbers to finish it off...looked more like an L...which they did do a lot of recently...Lose.
