Iowa 2-Deep for Wisconsin

Only Monday and it's a depth chart, but no Welch, Schott, Wieting or Brandon Smith, which was expected.

Not that Welch has been a world-beater, but Doyle at MLB. At least Wallace has had 2 weeks to get him ready. He better have his big boy pants ready for this one.

He's been playing since at least PSU. I think he's gonna be pretty solid too. Pat Angerer is impressed, going by his Twitter.

I thought Welch would be back. I was hoping for Smith. I had no clue that Wieting's injury was that significant. For Schott, he's missed so much time, it would be hard from him to get worked back into any substantial PT.

18 Freshmen on the two deeps, and only 6 Sophomores. .

Oh I know...he looked ROUGH in that PSU game. I am hoping the cumulative effect of getting quite a few practice reps has helped in preparing him for this game. Some of the offenses we've seen since he has been getting playing time have been misdirection, where small missteps and false steps lead to someone running by or getting to a spot a half-step late. Against Wisconsin those missteps could lead to Taylor running by you, but you also might be getting mauled by a 300+ Wisconsin OL at the same time. Thus the big boy pants...

True, but credit where its due, PSU did a good job mixing in that delayed run game in the second half, and that RB had a heck of a game. I think when going up a straightforward, downhill O like Wisconsin, his reads will naturally be a step quicker.

I think at this point regarding Martin it'll play out like this

He won't see more than a handful of snaps over the next few weeks, where I predict Iowa goes 1-1 at best. We'll bitch and moan about the offense (again, and rightfully so) not having any playmakers or struggling to score TD.

Final game of the year against NE, Oliver Martin gets significant snaps and scores 3 TD as we beat NE easily. Then we spend the next month wondering why oh why.....only to have him ride the bench in the bowl game.

Rinse and repeat for next year

I’m not so much worried about Doyle’s reads as I am his physical talent. Is he going to be able to make a play one on one with Taylor, id say unlikely, and that isn’t to say Welch or really other guys across the country can. I would certainly feel much better with Welch out there though.

Hopefully Martin and Goodson get limited snaps, and also, hopefully Petras doesn't get to touch the ball either, you always want your next in line QB to come in off the bench, cold and inexperienced. Trust the process.

I always thought it would be kind of neat to have a "two deeps" list of coaches as well. Which of the offensive assistants, for example, had a great game and week of practice, they would then wear the OC cap for the next game. Rewarding success, not succession.

So you have Iowa 1-1 over the next few weeks — which game gets cancelled?

Certainly that is part of what; what I was alluding to is that if he's not in the right spot, he's not going to make the play anyway and it's a moot point. But we traditionally play Wisconsin tough, most likely because it's the closest thing we see to our offense all year, and I'm hoping all these reps the last several weeks makes him serviceable.
