Iowa 11th in BIG conference Director's Cup - winter sports

The Cup may not be important to most fans as long as the $ sports are producing which is understandable but Iowa's own formal 5 year Strategic Plan (written for the athletic programs) aims for top half finish in the conference in all sports.......top 35 in the Director's Cup. It is also a part of Barta's comp plan.......not a big part but an incentive piece none the less.If you're going to have these sports available and the goal is to be competitive in all then someone has the responsibility to make that happen.......the AD. Iowa has the 7th largest athletic budget in the BIG so it's not like we don't have some ammo in the battle. To Barta's defense he has done a good job in other areas of his responsibilities (donations, facility upgrades, academic performance). Some would question his leadership in making timely changes regarding hiring and others could question his ability to make good hires for coaches that are heading some of these programs. I think the verdict is still out on the McCaffery hire although I think he will prove to be a good hire. I also think the verdict is still out on the Ferentz contract extension. Ferentz & Co. need to keep last season's momentum growing. Barta's future will rest in the hands of these two coaches and in all likelihood not the standings in the Director's Cup. Will McCaffery prove to be a good hire and will the Ferentz contract extension prove to be a smart move in the long term? The voice of reason.

Garble garble garble

The number of ADs that have been fired for poor performance in the Director's Cup currently stands at zero. The number that have been fired for making a bad football hire, is too high to count.

It is one of those that nobody cares about unless they are good at it. Putting it in a class with water polo, raising Daisies in the back yard, and 7U Soccer teams.

I don't understand. How can Gary Barta possibly have a 5 year plan based on the Directors Cup, if he's never heard of it? Maybe some of the geniuses in this thread can give Barta a call and explain how nobody's ever heard of it. Explain to him how they should just dump every sport that doesn't produce revenue because they don't matter. Of course, we would have had to dump the men's basketball program sometime around 2003 +/-. Who needs basketball anyway?

I guess Dean's our guy. Let us know what Barta said, will ya? You might have to pull your head out of your arse long enough to hear him speak but I think you can do it.

Quick question: why does every piece of unpleasant news have to be greeted with the tired old" Troll" response? Add something meaningful to the thread or move along. It makes you look like a child or a dumb azz. If that's your goal for this message board, by all means, carry on.

Unpleasant news? I honestly don't think 99% of the people who follow college sports care about the director's cut. The other 1% are called "clown fans" and "lightning1".

I apologize. I had incorrectly assumed that this was a troll job. Since you insist that it isn't, I will now mock you for caring about the directors cup, instead of mocking a terrible troll job. I honestly don't know which is sadder.

Yep if you don't get the importance of the director cup you a dumb azz. How else can you measure a AD's job. Money and facilities or a direction cup. Easy choice

Oh I see. You think the Director's Cup is actually newsworthy. Got it.

Carry on.

It's a fair representation of an AD's performance.

Is it? Do you really know what an athletic director's job is or do you just think you know what an athletic directors job is? Your post's are making me think the latter is true.

It's pretty rare that an athletic director gets fired for anything that happens on the field which is why they don't get fired nearly as often as coaches. Their job is to keep the money coming in. As long as the money keeps coming in at Iowa, Gary Barta will have his job barring some scandal.

It's not the entirety of his duties by any means but the AD is in charge of the coaching personnel, is he not? The coaches are hired to win games , or so I thought. If I'm mistaken and Barta is NOT in charge of the coaches, feel free to correct me.AD hires coaches to compete and to win games/events. If said coaches win more games than they lose, more fans pay to watch the games/events. Ticket sales drives revenue. Revenue is needed to pay for the costs of running the athletic department. Are these not the primary duties of the AD?

This has got to be a troll. Fans here care about football and basketball with a bunch of wrestling fans thrown in. If a guy is throwing a tantrum about badminton and women's field hockey..sorry. Not buying it.

I think trolling is stupid, but if you're gonna do it, try harder...cause this attempt is pathetic.

Exactly. If he actually cares about a directors cup...that's sad.
