Iowa 11th in BIG conference Director's Cup - winter sports

OK, the guy who posted this -- please concentrate.

Four sports matter. Four:

1. Football: 8-4 regular season; 2nd in the division. New Year's Day Bowl. Season ticket sales are strong. Picked to be in top 3 of divison this year.

2. Basketball: NCAA bid (first since 2006). Lots of players coming back.

3. Wresting: Top 5 finish in the United States.

4. Women's BB: NCAA bid

I give Barta a high grade.

You get an F for this post

Six of the sports included in the winter season are sports that Iowa doesn't even offer. As already mentioned, the main winter sports (MBB, WBB, wrestling) all performed well. The men's gymnastics team is consistently among the best nationally (although there aren't that many schools that still have it, the same could be said for wrestling), the men's swimming team has been pretty strong for several years (but did take a step back this year due to multiple loaded senior classes graduating). I don't know how the track teams did in the indoor season, but the men's team has been consistently in the top 3-4 in the B1G for a few years now, and the women's team looked improved at Drake (won the 4x100 when the women's sprinters never seemed to win anything when I was in school, as well as a few other events).

Honestly, the winter season has typically been pretty good for Iowa, at least recently. It's the spring season, where the men's track team has been carrying every other program, that's been the "problem" (assuming there's a problem to begin with). But baseball certainly looks like it's headed the right direction under Heller.

Iowa has finished 11th or dead last in BIG conference Director's Cup standings every year but once, since Barta was hired. The Directors Cup has a final year end standings as well as updates at the end of each semester. That's 7 out of 8 years of his employment. Now what excuses have you got? This is not my ranking. If you have a problem with where Gary Barta has Iowa in those standings, take it up with the folks that run the Director's Cup. Explain to them what you have explained to us here. Maybe they'll make the appropriate changes to make Gary Barta look like less of a failure?

How did Iowa do in Football, Basketball, and Wrestling?? Your troll is weak.

and how did iowa do in revenue generation and fund raising?

this guy really is ranting on tennis, golf, crew, gymnastics, swimming, et al? i assume that is the directors cup? our men's golf results so far this year should make him happy.

lightning - how often do you contribute to 'non-revenue' iowa sports. i mean, specifically stroke your checks to a sport not named football, basketball (i wonder if that is even a revenue sport).

The lack of respect that director s cup gets here is inexcusable. How else do we track sports that we are forced to offer and no one gives a flying lightning about.

Bartas head on a spike.

I doubt his head is on a spike but for a school to continue to drag at or near the bottom of its respective conference year in and year out is worth notice at a minimum. The Cup may not be important to most fans as long as the $ sports are producing which is understandable but Iowa's own formal 5 year Strategic Plan (written for the athletic programs) aims for top half finish in the conference in all sports.......top 35 in the Director's Cup. It is also a part of Barta's comp plan.......not a big part but an incentive piece none the less.

If you're going to have these sports available and the goal is to be competitive in all then someone has the responsibility to make that happen.......the AD. Iowa has the 7th largest athletic budget in the BIG so it's not like we don't have some ammo in the battle. To Barta's defense he has done a good job in other areas of his responsibilities (donations, facility upgrades, academic performance).

Some would question his leadership in making timely changes regarding hiring and others could question his ability to make good hires for coaches that are heading some of these programs. I think the verdict is still out on the McCaffery hire although I think he will prove to be a good hire. I also think the verdict is still out on the Ferentz contract extension. Ferentz & Co. need to keep last season's momentum growing. Barta's future will rest in the hands of these two coaches and in all likelihood not the standings in the Director's Cup. Will McCaffery prove to be a good hire and will the Ferentz contract extension prove to be a smart move in the long term?

Can someone explain to me how this even works? Will the schools that offer the most sports continually outscore the schools that do not offer them? For example, does Iowa get points for baseball (even if they are lousy) while ISU gets a 0 for that sport every year or is the point total averaged out by the number of sports the school has?

I'm sure volleyball has drug down Iowa's score for several years due to them being a perennial bottom feeder but Barta recently landed a home-run hire for the school in that sport. http://www.hawkeyesports.com/sports/w-volley/spec-rel/013114aac.html

Did you just write 3 paragraphs on the directors cup?

Want to read my essay on the economic impact of mayflies on the city of Dubuque?

The only cup that matters is Lord Stanley's, now excuse me while I go fill Lightning1's mama's water bowl
