internal hire vs new blood

i see a lot of posters that seem to think that an internal hire is an opportunity lost by the hawkeyes towards defensive coordinator. i would argue that the job kf is supposed to do is hire the best man for the job. yet some seem to believe that an internal hire and the best man for the job are mutually exclusive things. i felt that aiken was the best man for the job from all the names thrown out but he is off the board and #2 to me was parker.

i actually see this as an opportunity and here is why:
1) he can do what norm used to and be a dc and position coach allowing for an open position on the staff...maybe a special teams coach.
2) it will give us someone already understanding of the 4-3 cover 2 system that kf employs...key statement it is kf system not norm.
3) he already knows the players and recruits.
4) he is probably the most successful position coach we have had outside of offensive linemen.

i also feel it is a little hypocritical to be glad for woods promotion as an internal hire but at the same time frown on parker. both are very deserving and have put in the time. one poster i remember stated a short resume for parker on another thread and said if we didnt know the name on it we would be excited for the coach. and i believe he is correct.

last i believe we will get an outside-ish hire. i believe morgan will be retiring and brian ferentz will become the ol coach.

so my hope is:
1) parker - dc/db
2) woods - dl
3) brian ferentz - ol (morgan retires)
4) 1 opening for a true special teams coach

Good point about Woods. Everyone's high on him and many are down on Parker. Parker is proven, while Woods is not. Not saying Woods won't be good, just pointing out the double standard.

After what we have seen for 15 years, i think whomever is hired will be just fine. Special teams has been a joke for the last few years and needs to be dealt with immediately! The offense needs to be dealt with immediately as well. If there is any dropoff in the defense and the offense and special teams don't improve, then we are looking at many 4-7 win seasons. Not much ROI in my opinion.

I prefer a DC that knows how to get stops instead of one who knows how to make our stats look good, making it appear that we have a better D then we actually do.

defense is about not giving up pts. yards do not always equal points. the kf system has worked for iowa more often than it hasnt. any new dc will bring a little bit of a different twist to the defense but the overall theories will stay the same because it is the head coach that determines the style. our defensive system works and parker being the db coach may decide we have good dbs and put them in man to man a little more. this could lead to more blitzes. we dont know until we see at least 1 season. but remember he is just calling the defense it is still kf system.

my question would be, If Phil Parker is hired and has the exact same success as Norm, would you take it? it seems that there are those on here that would not accept it.

giving up yards doesn't always mean your opponents will get points but it can also lead to bad field position which means less points for your offense.

people are pretty short minded when they look at stats and decide our offense sucks and our defense is great. our offense and defense are equally responsible for our offensive production. if we can hire a DC that can give us a defense that can get off the field, our offensive production will go up

You people are acting like we just came off of a national championship season! Our D tanked during the 2nd half of last season and this year we only finsihed 7-6 against a very favorable schedule. It's time for some new blood, but the odds are pretty good that we'll just have more of the same. Things are getting stale.

Why does it really matter if it's internal or external?[/QUOT

because right or wrong people feel like our coaches have pooled their minds together and come up with the best possible game plan that they can come up with. people thing that that game plan doesn't give us our best chance to win so they are holding out hope that someone from outside the program can bring new ideas to the table. I for one agree because when you have a defense full of NFL players, I don't think the best game plan is to sit back and wait for the other team to make a mistake.

new blood will not change the system. the system is based off the head coach. we may blitz more or play man to man more or go to a nickel package more but our base will be a 4-3 cover 2 defense because that is the system that kf employs. if you dont like the system then you want a new hc. but then you are barking up the wrong tree because he has been just as productive as fry was (depending on opinions a little more or a little less). the system is the one that develops and gets these players to the pros because they can read and react. not just blitz like a dumb fool. it takes no brains and not as much skill to blitz our defensive players have skill and ubderstanding of reads and that is why we have nfl players that can adapt to different defenses that they get drafted and signed to.

but who's to say a new DC won't change kirks mind on the scheme he runs?

changing schemes gets people fired. stick to your guns. you recruit to fit your scheme. look at how well rich rod did by changing schemes they had the worst defenses in mich history. we need to adjust the scheme (i dont deny this). the scheme isnt broken it just needs a few tweaks. everything does at times.

the offense is the same it needs tweaks but the system isnt broken. on offense we need to use more motion and packages to dictate match ups. on defense we need to use more blitzes to keep qbs guessing a little more. valid things that could help. but wholesale changes are a recipe for disaster.

totally agree

I think most people know that Ferentz has to go through the motions but in the end will be loyal and faithful and will put friendship over the health of the program and will select Parker. I doubt anyone else really had a chance (except his son perhaps). Bring in an outsider, interview him, and then tell everyone he is one of the top three. That way it looks like he is considering an outsider. His loyalty to his staff and best friends are far more important than the good of the Iowa program and always has been.
